Weeds problem! Please help!
Comments (4)It took me almost a month to recover from back pain earlier this year. When my husband was at home looking after kids, I weeded with a newly bought weed hound in cold windy weather, and in the dim evening light. I worked hard for two weeks. I filled 64-gallon trash can with dandelines and Buckhorn plantain. Then a month later, they all came back. I will try Weed-b-gon after hurricane Irene passes. And how long can pre-emergent last? Is it better to spray pre-emergent in Feb just after all the snow melts, or spray in March when temp is in the 40s or 50s high. Thank you all....See MoreWisteria with weed problem -- help, please
Comments (4)The long probe idea that you mentioned is what I have the best luck with in these situations. The ones you buy are forked on the end and are sometimes called 'dandelion fork', but you might be able to use something else without having to purchase one. I lucked up and found one at a yard sale but if I ever lose this one I wouldn't hesitate to buy another it really helps when weeding out those things with the long tap root. Just push in right next to the weed and pop it right out. Works great!...See MoreThese HUGE weeds! Anyone?
Comments (3)And they will continue to grow baak because they have a fleshy root. To remove, you'll have to do a lot of digging. But that won't guarantee a fix because remaining pieces can still sprout. That said, you can win, though, as long as you repeatedly remove all top growth every two weeks. Or use a translocated herbicide -- one that goes into the roots -- and repeat every time it reappears....See MorePlease Please help i have a problem with Marestail / Horsetail weed
Comments (4)This plant has a very deep and widespreading root system........the plants in your neighbor's garden are related/attached by roots to those in your garden. Unless your neighbor works to eliminate the problem in his garden, you will continue to battle the problem in yours. Digging and removing what roots you can find can help and will not encourage spreading. But removal of ALL top growth as it appears is better. Without an ability to photosynthesize (or produce the spore producing fertile stalks), the roots eventually weaken and die off....at least in that area. Equisetum has a high silica content and this is what resists herbicides. If you cut the plants back and then apply a strong herbicide (not vinegar - it will have virtually no effect) to the cut stems, it will be translocated down into the root system. But again, this is not a one time shot - you must continue to do this when you see any growing stems. Persistence is the key here :-) You will never fully succeed in eliminating a plant that has been around for 30 million years but persistence and determination can keep it under control and out of your growing areas....See MoreJim Banville
