So you have the Broan 6" MD6T and you have it unfiltered, unconditioned, and ouputting under the fridge for conditioning purposes? So you are relying on the exhaust heat of the fridge to cool the incoming air? How cold did it get this past winter for you? How cold was that make up air? Detectable at all? Here we had -20 real feel in NY with the wind chill at times. It was brutally cold and cold often. I think I might have to put in a heated MUA. So update on Broan. The lady I spoke to today was completely useless. To make a long story short she had absolutely no idea how to use the Make Up Air Specifier on her site. It was quite pathetic and my impressions of Broan's customer service = suck. I spoke to Dean at Electro Industries at length about all the factors I'm thinking about. We went over two options - one using the MA-10 (10kw all in one 10" heater with damper, blower, filter, and current detector to control blower speed) and the less expensive heater unit EM-WX1025R. The broan MD6T comes with a 24volt 20VA transformer so I could then use the one signal to turn on both the Broan damper and the heater unit. Both options unit can accomodate up to 637cfm in a 50 degree temperature rise. It's a 10kW unit though and would require a 50A or 60A two pole (240V) breaker and its own dedicated lines (of course). I can take care of the electrical so no problem there but man I'm guessing my heating bill (which was astronimical last year) will be more than I can tolerate this year. Temperature Rise Needed/CFM EM-WX1025R 10000 Watts 80/395 70/452 60/527 50/632 40/790 30/1054 MA-10 $1917 + freight EM-WX1025R $800 + freight. I think that should be sufficient - it's better to have 50 degree air coming in than 0 degree air. I'm thinking that maybe I can get away with non-heated air if I can get fresh air to come up that old supply register near the range. The opening is closer than the fireplace but it might work if I put a blower in-line as well.

Well, I guess three things on the roof then with the MUA. While commercial systems mostly use roof MUA entry, and I use roof MUA entry, the options for residences are wide open and may include side of house entry, or entry into a basement that has an air path access to the kitchen.

It would be best to start any quest involving kitchen ventilation to study the literature, or at least study the many many threads here on the topic. I would prefer to write answers to questions that are based on my possibly inadequate previous writing than generate yet another long message covering the entire topic. You may wish to start with the "Hood FAQ" which can be found by searching. I believe it is listed under @opaone. Hoods are about capture and containment, and success in this depends on many factors, the most critical of which is sufficient air flow velocity at the hood entry to ensure that which is captured is contained and expelled from the residence. This velocity is independent of how many burners are running at once, but rather what the cooking surface temperature is plus plume heat augmentation by gas burners. In any case, the 100 CFM per 1000 BTUh is derived from certain standardized commercial hoods, not residential hoods. See the Greenheck Guide available at https://www.tagengineering.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/KVSApplDesign_catalog.pdf for comparison between the 100 CFM per rule of thumb and the hood aperture velocity rule. I suggest 90 CFM per square foot of hood entry aperture, and this aperture needs to be large enough to overlap the rising and expanding cooking plumes. Let me adjust the salesman's statement: "...because the design pulls more air than a filtered/baffled hood of the same [zero static pressure rated] cfm [when hanging unattached to anything in free air]." Ventahood use squirrel-cage blowers that also perform the function of baffle filters, thereby eliminating that cause of pressure loss. However, as blowers go, they are more susceptible to other pressure losses than conventional blowers, and hence if there is extensive ducting, or inadequate MUA, their flow rate will be less than the actual rate asserted. My guess is that you should have a 24 x 42 inch hood aperture, requiring an actual 630 CFM obtained from a 900 - 1000 CFM rated blower. Read MUA related threads to determine how closely the interior air pressure has to match the exterior air pressure for safety. Your state may require heated MUA. There are a lot of ways to accomplish MUA under these conditions, and the threads here should help you understand what you have to tell us to allow better tailored help. kas

About right. Ceiling supply should be via diffuser, not register, if it is necessary to aim the flow. Flow from a long distance (20 ft say) should be toward the hood; flow from a short distance should be aimed away from the hood to minimize local turbulence; intermediate cases depend on all the stuff in the room. You likely will need a heater depending on your agricultural zone.
