Ikea wooded cabinets (TORHAMN)
Comments (36)I’m reading this like Marites Pine would love to take the wall out if she had the money for her dream kitchen, but knows it‘s not in her budget, so she’s remodeling with the wall remaining. And that’s why she hasn’t bothered checking with a structural engineer. And I think others (live_wire_oak and Andi) are thinking she’s removing the wall, but doing it without an engineer to save money. Marites Pine, can you clarify? To answer the question in the OP (and I know this thread is 18 months old, but I'm answering anyway for future readers): I have Torhamn in my basement kitchenette, and they are solid wood. Having said that, I wouldn’t paint them. They are one of IKEA’s pricier doors, and they will be more expensive to purchase, and cost more in labor to paint, because you’ll have to remove the existing finish first. I bought paint-grade doors from Barker Doors for my IKEA kitchen. You can see a detailed price breakdown on the bids I got from Barker, Scherr’s, and Semihandmade, as well as my process for painting here: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5182903/barker-doors-vs-semihandmade-vs-scherr-s-in-ikea-kitchen-results#24360789...See MoreBarker Doors vs. Semihandmade vs. Scherr's in IKEA kitchen : RESULTS
Comments (134)@jdesign_gw and anyone else wanting to tackle hinge drilling affordable. While the 3-in-1 Blum drill is great, it's not diy affordable. One extra step, but not bad if you're not doing this everyday. I did this and painted 100+ doors in my house. For the 35mm bore hole. https://www.amazon.com/Kreg-Tool-Company-KHI-HINGE-Concealed/dp/B01JQ74FMQ/ref=asc_df_B01JQ74FMQ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309763090755&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11433647920691291326&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1026411&hvtargid=pla-423472884902&psc=1 For the 8mm alignment hole. This is used after drilling the 35mm hole. INSERTA Boring Template Blum 65059A https://www.woodworkerexpress.com/hinge-accessories-inserta-boring-template-0-type-inserta-boring-template.html Both can be used with a hand drill if desired. No adjusting out errors. That was taken out of context....See MoreWhat construction technique do you use for cabinet doors?
Comments (46)Yes, you could do that. You definitely want the back of the false drawer front to be supported and flush on the back. Another option would be to use solid stock for the center panel and rabbet that piece instead of rabbeting the rails and stiles. Are you using featherboards on both the table and the router table fence? I use both so that I'm only using push sticks to feed the stiles. I place them tight enough that there is no slop and it's almost difficult (but not dangerously so) to feed. You can also spray your fence and table with a silicon spray for glide. If you didn't do this for your sample door, mill your rail ends first. Then mill the stiles and the long edge of the rails second. That way if you have any tearout on the rail ends, it's hidden by the second lengthwise cut. And also, if you haven't already, make a setup block out of a scrap of wood that is the same thickness as your door material. When you're finally ready to do the doors for real, milling all the rails - and then all the stiles - allows less room for error and is more efficient (i.e., fewer changeovers from one bit to the other)....See MoreOpinions on Ikea kitchen cabinets?
Comments (67)Thank you for the comment! I have an 8x8 kitchen in the guest house, and that guest house is just for my teenagers to hang out really, not like we are expecting the Queen of England to visit, and I was all ready to get an ikea kitchen because it looks easier to install with the rails and etc. But then I got overwhelmed with choices and parts and assembly and their planner tool... So my $1500 kitchen plan quickly morphed into $3500. Plus the planner tool said I needed like 200 items (feet, shelf pegs, rails, hinges, toe kick, yada yada just too much work for one impatient person. So then I thought, I know Knoxhult! Modular, so easy to order, few decisions to make... But you can only put an RV sized sink into that. So then Homedepot unfinished have served me well in the past, and they have a 60" sink cabinet for $159! It looks nice, I mean it's not hand-hewn teak but whatever. I would rather stain than paint because I hate painting... But now I'm thinking artichoke green with wood counter would be so nice. Anyway, I have a few months before moving forward but I think I'm going with the unfinished. Good luck on your project! And the dogs look innocent to me... I think the cat framed them!...See More_sophiewheeler
