Windows Design Dilemma living room

Window treatments for living room

We are remodeling our entryway, living room and kitchen. I'm pretty much settled on everything other than the living room window treatments. I have 3 windows, all 34" by 82" with 9' ceilings. I have bought drapes that I will double up and place at either side of the block of windows. At the moment I have a valance box across the top of the windows and that is my issue. I have bought fabric to recover it, very modern, but now am rethinking my idea and wonder if I should just remove it. It is rectangular, no scallops, but I still think perhaps it is not in style today. I know it is personal taste but still would like some opinions. Thanks

Take it down and see how you like the look of your room without the valance. Years ago, the window treatments were layers upon layers and it's a very dated look. Will you be drawing the drapes shut every night for privacy?

Thanks, I agree that looking at it down will help. It is not ornate, just a simple box that we built about ten years ago. If I recover it there won't be layers, just a geometric pattern, colors are off white, light and dark grey. Drapes can be closed but as they windows have blinds we won't "have" to close, only if we want to.

I wish I could help you...I'm curious what others will have to say since I'm in a similar situation. I keep hearing people talking about caramel colors and wondering if that would look nice against the sage green walls. I know it will help others if you're able to post photos of your room. Astrid

I think that i would go with shorter shades or sheers and longer fabrics that will hang outside window when not in use. I love sheers and fabric curtains. there are many places where you spend much less than $200. just a few Bellacor, hay needle, houzz, and more, look in my pillow folder, most of those place sell curtains too. for sheers you can get fab prices nearly anywhere, even walmart, ikea used to have $5 ones.

This isn't about your windows, but I wish your carpet had been large enough to go much further than just the sectional, far enough to include the window area. You could then also have a side table with a lamp, which gives a much warmer glow than those horrible overhead lights. You have enough room for curtains which will soften your look. Painting the wooden window surround is a great idea. I would choose cream side panels in a linen-type fabric.
