Opinions on best 'match' to Douglas Fir? photo
Comments (9)Thanks, folks! I would love to do reclaimed floors. Unfortunately, they have been impossible to find here in the right size, and having them brought in from elsewhere would completely blow the budget at this point. We tried very hard to save the kitchen flooring so we could at least use part of it, but it was in horrible shape. I am going to keep my eyes open and see if I find anything for reclaimed wood. The floors were not stained when we refinished them, and they have never been waxed. (Except if kittens sliding across it on dropcloths count! When we were doing some plaster repair, Oliver and his brother, Toby, would jump from the stairs and slide across the room.) So I guess it could be either Douglas or Southern yellow pine. Does the fact the house is in Massachusetts make a difference? We got samples of Mercier pre-finished hardwood flooring, and the closest matches were in their honey finish: white ash, then white oak, then maybe red oak, then hard maple (for color, not at all a match for graining.) So unless something comes up for reclaimed flooring in the next two weeks, we will be using the white ash. Thanks again, Emmie...See MoreDouglas fir flooring in kitchen
Comments (5)This is a very common question. As the poster above mentioned, Fir is relatively soft; however, one of the beautiful things about Douglas Fir Flooring is that as it weathers, it absorbs nicks and blemishes into the wood. If you are hoping for a floor that is blemish free and pristine, Fir is not your choice. If you are looking for something that is warm and filled with character, than Douglas Fir Flooring is a great idea. As to putting it in the kitchen, keep in mind that the finish you use will be imperative to the durability of your floor. If using a water based finish, we recommend using an extra coat above and beyond the manufacturer's directions. Good Luck with your project. Comments (8)We have the same situation (oversanded floors) with our 1916 home. It has standard oak floors so we don't have your issue. We're also doing a small addition--half of which is kitchen--and we need to specify our floors (in the new part) next week. (We'll do the old part later, so we have a place to move our stuff into!) A question: Is Tung Oil usable/advisable in a kitchen? Or should we stick with poly? (We have little kids and really use our kitchen!) And does Tung Oil always yield a dark floor? We'd like it fairly light. What we don't want to end up with is one of those really shiny finishes -- but can good floor guys yield a more traditional finish with poly? Any other ideas? Thoughts please! I know that some people say that pre-finished floors are the best for a kitchen, but we really don't like that beveled-edge look....See MoreNeed help taming “Orange” Douglas fir ceilings -choosing flooring
Comments (2)I’ve used those gel stains before to turn 70’s cabinets into cherry cabinets with extremely good results. Unfortunately the ceiling is rough and would have to be sanded before anything could be applied. The cost to pay someone to stand on 30 ft scaffolding and sand overhead isn’t in my budget, even if I could find someone willing to do the work....See Moregirl_wonder
