Neighbor sprayed hydrangeas with weed killer- any hope?
Comments (3)Oh sweetie, I feel terrible for you. I know I'd be devestated if a neighbor hurt my hydrageas. Have you tried watering them really well? It might help to get some of the poison out. I wouldn't over water, it might do more damage. I would also try to trim off the leaves that look like hey have damage maybe that will prevent any lingering weed killer from going into the plant and hope for the best, although from what I read in your post this happened weeks ago so it migh just direct energy into new growth. Hopefully someone else here might be able to help. Keep us posted....See MoreBig Cheap Hydrangeas -- Any Hope?
Comments (3)"The folks at Lowes were clueless." Why am I not surprised :-) No hydrangeas are annuals. They may have applied that label to what are commonly referred to as greenhouse or florist's hydrangeas - regular ol' bigleaf hydrangeas that are grown under greenhouse conditions and manipulated with fertilizers and growth hormones to bloom precociously and at any time of year. These are often considered "throw away" plants, sold indoors as gift items, as they will not reliably adapt to life outdoors in any but the mildest of climates. In zone 8, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting them to adapt. They will need shade, so dig up those cannas unless you have another suitable location and keep them well watered until temps cool and fall rains arrive. Sounds like they are doing well enough inspite of your late heat wave....See MoreI hope my hydrangea bed is finally done!!! :-)
Comments (16)By its own nature Olga Mezit have an open habit (vs more tight/dense habit of PJM) which IMO is a nice feature in naturalistic plantings where shrubs ment to grow into each other without featuring them as individual focal points. However, if this is not what you want in this particular situation, I'd suggest to prune off about 1/2 of the new growth every year in a first 3-4 years after planting in order to create more dense branch structure. Pruning should be done within 1 month after the flowering in order not to interfere with next year flowering buds formation....See MoreEGO45 and the hydrangea you gave me last year
Comments (8)Wow, Richie, that looks fabulous!! Really, it's just wonderful. I remember the lot behind you and this definitely improves the view and gives a great backdrop for your plants. I like the way the bit of lattice work at the end keeps it from looking too stockade-like. Did you put in the fence yourself? Can I ask where you got it from? It's so nice to see a wooden fence - I don't care for the vinyl/plastic ones that are so popular now. Are you going to stain or paint it? Sorry for all the questions. It's just that I've been considering a fence around a garden and I'm just not sure - I'm on the fence, lol! Sorry, that just popped into my head, lol. But seriously, it really looks great. Nice job! :) Dee P.S. One last question - are you going to grow anything up the fence? I know you've done some espalier work before, so this might be a good site for more, depending on sun exposure. P.P.S Okay, one LAST question - where did you get the planter? Very nice!...See MoreBourbon Milkshake
