Wolf Wall Hoods with Induction Cooktop

We are looking at the following 36 inch Wolf wall hoods:

- Low Profile Wall Hood (PW362210) - 22 inches deep, 10 inches high

- Pro Wall Hood (PW362418) - 24 inches deep, 18 inches high

It would go over a 36 induction cooktop, and it's for a new house we are building. Which one do you think would look better? I like the professional look but it would be going over a sleeker looking induction cooktop rather than range. OK to do taller/deeper one?

What kind of blower should we get? Internal blower? Remote blower? In-Line Blower? Which is quietest and most effective?

Does it have to have the Wolf logo brand sticker on front? I think it comes without it, which is good because we would not put it on.

Are these 2 Wolf wall hoods good, or would you recommend another brand? If so, which one? Looking for quiet and effective and I like the standard/professional wall hood look.

As you may find searching hood threads in this forum, the hood should ideally overlap the cooking area (locus of pan surfaces) to capture the rising and expanding cooking plume effluent. So wider and deeper are your friends, if not your pocketbook's friends.

In-line and roof blowers have the advantage of moving all noise (except baffle hiss) away from the cook, and, in come house configurations, providing room for an in-line silencer that will significantly reduce blower blade tip turbulence noise (normally the dominant noise among all of them). Duct noise on the roof side of the silencer will also be reduced.

My Wolf hood (actually made by Independent in those days) came with the logo sticker separate so you could put it where you wanted, even in a drawer.

For reasons explained elsewhere, aim for a blower rated near 135 CFM per square foot of the entry aperture (base) of the hood you select.

No air goes up the duct that doesn't get into the house, and it has to get in with low pressure loss or you need a higher CFM rated blower. But this negatively pressurizes your house. Negative pressure has disadvantages, including back-drafting any combustion appliances without their own sealed make-up air. So don't just look at hoods without looking into how you intend to replace (and potentially heat or cool) the air the hood moves out of the kitchen. Search MUA on this forum for clues.

Thanks, why do you like Vent-a-hood? Is Wolf bad or you just prefer Vent-a-hood? Do you know about the similar style Vent-a-hood PRH-18? If so, do you like it? Thanks again!

Larsi - I am not in total agreement on the buzzing. I do have some low level buzzing but harder to hear with the fan engaged. I have all top end (various brands). All Clad, DeMeyere, CIA, LeCr, Staub, ScanPan and probably a few other brands hiding in my drawers and Super Susan. I only have one of each size - just a number of different brands that I picked up over the years.(OK - I might have more than one 2.5qt pan) Lexi - I wouldn't be overly concerned but if you can try it out to make sure it won't bother you too much. I am very noise sensitive and am OK with it. The benefits outweigh this issue. Also- gas makes noise as well - just different noises. I don't think my coil electric ever made noise. I fortunately avoided the ceramic electric non-induction phase. Of note - I seem to have a defective LED light. When it is on, the buzzing is amplified. I need to replace it but in the mean time, I tend to turn off the big lights and use the cooktop light to minimize the effect. I had Wolf come look at my cooktop early on and it the buzzing wasn't bad when they came - but alas, it took me two years to figure out the root cause. When Wolf came to fix my oven, I gave a demonstration so they would know I wasn't totally nuts when I complained about the sound. LOL

trove: My Miele odor comment was intended as a zinger directed at Miele due to various complaints on this forum about dishwasher odor (probably not confined just to Miele). Some who have looked into this in depth have recently blamed it on humidity acting on microscopic food particles not flushed by the dishwashing process, and on dirty liquid in the dishwasher plumbing left over after operation. I know I have had odor problems at times with my Optima, but due to onset of winter have to wait until summer to try to verify whether either cause of blame is consistent with my observations. Miele has to conform to European laws relating to energy efficiency, and this also affects water usage. It may be that old style American dishwashers remained more sanitary in humid conditions after their drying cycle. I don't recall odor from childhood dishwashers, but I think my family's dishwasher was run more often than my Miele. kas

I saw the newest Wolf induction cooktop and I was impressed with its versatility. Specifically, I am speaking of model CI365T/S. I really like the burner layout with the four burners that can be bridged on one side and a larger oval burner on the other side. It offers what seems to be the most flexible layout. There are other induction cooktops with "flexible" zones but they are in a layout that is less versatile, most commonly with a large round hob in the center and the flexible zones on either side. My building does not have gas so when I upgrade, I will be looking at induction. As of now, I think the Wolf is my favorite but I am a year or two out and something new may change my thinking.

A range width hood against a wall with side curtains or cabinets will likely capture cooking plumes from the back burners, but front burner capture will require good hood aperture overlap of the pan bases unless extravagant flow rates are present to effectively extend the hood capture area by entraining plume effluent. Hoods are very poor at extending their flow rate very far from the hood edges. How well a given hood flow velocity (ft./min. = CFM/sq. ft.) works will depend on the velocity of the plume and how far the plume extends past the hood edge. See plots in Chapter 30, 2003 ASHRAE Handbook: HVAC Applications. Better is to overlap the expanding plumes and use just as much flow rate as necessary to ensure containment.

I have a Wolf gas cooktop and did a custom hood not from Wolf. The reason is only that their selection was limited.

Neat hood! I am not that into hoods so the standard wall hood is fine for me. Just want it to look ok, function well, and not be too noisy. Do you know if the Wolf ones are ok, or should I switch to Vent-a-Hood? Thanks!

I forget the brands but we have a grill in our cook top and a 1200 cfm inline fan above. The in line fan will be quieter than one that is in your kitchen. One mistake we made is that the hood does not come out far enough to cover more of the grill. Smoke from the grill sometimes eludes the pull of the hood because there is no hood immediately above it. If you do a fan that pulls more than 400 cfm (I think) code requires a dedicated fresh air supply. Ours is called "an open window" which is not to code but works for us and the inspector didn't catch it.

Last thought - this is our second home and i was very disapointed at how little experience the builder, kitchen guy, HVAC guy and code enforcement knew about big exhaust fans.

And be ready to be disappointed in how little the vendors and installers of this equipment know about MUA.

Good job on choosing induction. Staying below 400 CFM and not using ANY combustion appliances is the easiest, safest and most cost effective path.

The industry is behind on MUA issues and it's commonly ignored altogether. Still, this is an important life-safety minimum building code and future inhabitants could bear fairly serious burdens of such short sighted building practices.

The pro version would be more effective with its wider capture of 24" which still seems short to me. External blower is most quiet but quietness adds risk for those with backdrafting issues. By choosing a smaller blower (like those under 400) it might be quiet enough to stick with internal mount.
