Need help decorating outdoor living space
We have a lovely 14' x 26' space between our dining room and living room that needs some
help. Purchased the furniture from Costco when we moved in 4 years ago. We live in southern California and could use this space year round. Home is Mediterranean style.
What do we need to do to make this more inviting?
Outdoor Rug
New throw pillows
Plants
New Coffee table

Comments (4)Let me preface by saying I am not a designer, but asthetically for me I think front porches need a roof over them that works well with the existing roof. You do have a roof that extends that I think you could tie into, or square off, and then frame it with some nice columns. That being said, if this were me, I would get a professional involved. Someone who could work up a sketch, to give you the vision that you need to get started. This is coming from an avid DIY'r too. Comments (5)srecrcr - That's the current plan - a single level deck - but b/c of the slope of the land - it'll ending being higher than our fence line. We will be adding "screening" foliage but we were afraid that it woukd look ackward. DH thought the same thing about the grill, but it really wouldn't be that far. Comments (6)Hi Terracing on a slope can be done to give different useful areas. Here is one of the projects we did with the lower level being a firepit area and the upper level being synthetic lawn. With the last photo being the before. There are ways to make the walls look more natural by using a different type of block or growing plant material on them. From the plant material it looks like you live in california. (I see a bougnavillea). Comments (44)Sounds like you and hubby aren’t on the same page. Buying a table, without ability to return is red flag to me. He bought that rug too without your involvement. The rug is wrong size and style. No photo of the table. But better sit down and talk about this and reach some compromises otherwise, these situations can fester and get ugly over time....See More

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoDoug has the plants covered. I'd pull the arrangement in to a tighter U shape so the chairs are closer to the ends of the loveseat. Then you could add another end table. Your stone is so pretty I don't think I would add an outdoor rug. If that's a junction box for a light fixture, I would definitely consider adding a gorgeous fixture.

I would do 2 flamestitch in 18x18 and the colorblock in 16x16.

6 years agoI would add some small side tables so you have a place to set a drink without having to lean forward to the coffee table. I don’t think you need a rug, just plants.

6 years agoAs I said, I think your stone is beautiful and I wouldn't want to cover it up. But if you prefer a rug for the area, I would look for something solid since your stone has so much movement. Maybe a solid with a contrasting border. Perhaps something like this.

6 years agoYou appear to have three rounded stone planters built into the stone wall outside the patio area. I don't know what is currently planted in them, but I'm guessing it may only be volunteer trees. I would turn the center one into a water feature to add a pleasant sound to your outdoor room. Then plant up the other two with flowers. As for the furniture, I would rearrange it with the sofa facing the outdoors side of the patio to enjoy the view of the wall and planters. Angle the two chairs opposite it. Move your two planters behind the sofa, flanking the slider, so you have flowers at both ends of the patio for everyone to enjoy. Close the tops of the two little metal stool/tables with lucite (or whatever came with them) and move one by each chair to be useful for setting drinks. Rescue your droopy string lights and put them on the tile roof edge. Add a coordinated rug and pillows in your favorite color. Anything can work with the neutral surroundings, and don't worry about the stone being too busy. Its background, so have fun with colors you love.
