hypothetical question for diy'ers and ikea'ers
Comments (17)dianalo, I'd love to see your Applad kitchen if you care to post photos! I think I remember seeing a shot of your drawers with the vintage pulls -- that was yours, right? The only problem I have with the idea of Applad uppers is that we have slab white uppers now, and they look kind of stark covering the whole wall next to white appliances too. But then ours are more like the Ikea Harlig ones -- square-edged, slightly textured laminate. Perhaps a different finish would make a difference. I agree with you about the Applad soft white; it's a good color. I've got a Lidingo sample door (a dollar or two from the as-is room) and the color is just right in our kitchen. I know Applad is the same finish. The paint I got to test-match (BM Simply White) looks great in here too. One thing is, this kitchen has always had white slab doors. Its original cabinets had plain doors with rounded edges, partial overlay on painted wood frames. Next it got the slab melamine frameless, which as you know is a very different look because of the square edges and no space between the doors and no hinges showing. If I put in Applad everywhere it would look sort of like the old 40's steel cabinets (I think you have said this yourself) -- except that I don't usually think of steel wall cabinets going to the ceiling. Probably not a bad option for this house though....See Moreplease review my kitchen design - not urgent but hope to hear
Comments (23)As requested earlier from Davidro who wanted to understand traffic flow, below is a whole house "sketch" which shows our first floor layout (upstairs is only a loft) and second diagram is where I'm at with regard to kitchen design after input from you guys and after Ikea consultant/designer who was at my home today gave as far as cabinets fitting. Also, from the earlier discussion, I had some confusion about whether I could relocate the washer/dryer to the hall. The contractor who visited today didn't have any problems with the relocation. It helps a lot that our foundation is "pier and beam". Moving plumbing around is a whole lot easier. New location of washer/dryer may be a bit claustrophobic in the hall way outside the bathroom but I only do laundry a couple times a week for short spurts. I'm in the kitchen a whole lot longer and since the relocation of washer/dryer is the only thing keeping me from having the kitchen layout I REALLY wanted from the beginning (barring the fact the pantry has gotten quite a bit smaller), I am a happy camper. I'm going to lie low a while and get our bathroom done and maybe a roof before I come back with any updates on the kitchen. And for anyone who is in doubt, the Ikea prices for all cabinets is half of what price was quoted for Innermost cabinets by Home Depot. And the Ikea quote includes several of the appliances though I'm not sure yet if that is how I will really go. But cabinets -yes - their prices are too good to pass up. The money we save can go for the bathroom we're getting that has a curbless shower, and several other expensive details which Ikea can't help us out on. I'll still be listening but hopefully everyone can see the aisles around the island are considerably wider (maybe even too wide with my feet problems). If I need more pantry space, I'm fairly sure that several of the drawers in the main part of the kitchen will not all be used so I can use them for pantry space spill over if there is any. THANKS AGAIN (though I will definitely be back - still need to pick out countertop/backsplash/flooring/hoodOverCooktop and make decisions about appliances..) And since I haven't marked it well, let me explain that there are upper cabinets on either side of the cooktop and also to the left of the fridge. No uppercabinets on the sides of the "cleanup sink" with the large 6 foot wide window. Think I may wait until kitchen is done and probably install some open floating shelves on either side of cleanup sink - more for esthetics than function but I think I can wait until the last minute for that. (Maybe even some art work...)...See MoreAnother Kitchen Remodel - Ikea Layout advice
Comments (63)As a buyer that one cabinet on the window wall would both bug me aesthetically and scream "not enough storage so we crammed cabinets everywhere we could" which makes the space issue super obvious. Yes, it is a small kitchen and storage is going to be a concern, but you want buyers to be thinking 'oh, what a lovey space!' rather than 'but where would I put my X?' when they are looking at it. The space issue is for them to figure out after they buy it if they don't notice before. It also visually closes in the space and makes it feel smaller. If you feel like you must have some kind of storage there I'd go with shallow open shelving - it seems like a nice place for a hot drink station (tea, coffee) potentially, so you could have shelves just deep enough for mugs and canisters of tea/sugar/etc. Somethig like that which provides storage but looks like things are just there because it's nice to have them accessible, not because there is no where else for them to go. (When I've had smaller kitchens I usually get creative with storage in adjacent rooms. Unless they snoop, no one can tell that your nice server cabinet in the dining room has less-used pots and pans or canned goods in it instead of tablecloths and placemats.)...See MoreDo you like Ikea?
Comments (25)Las month (July) I found a bathroom wall-mounted vanity for $670 (solid wood, high gloss gray finish) that I was going to use for my brother's bathroom. It was the perfect size and had a sink in the middle with counterspace on either side. I checked inventory at my local store (Carson, CA), and it said that they had 10 in stock, and so I decided that I could wait until we got back from our vacation to Michigan and Philadelphia to order it. Big mistake. On August 1, they introduce new lines and many old ones are eliminated. So I called their number to try to find out if they still had this vanity in inventory. I don't know where the person I reached was, but I believe it was somewhere on the East Coast. He told me that he had no idea whether the Carson store had this in inventory and also that it was impossible to call the Carson store directly. How's that for customer service?? Evidently they have none, and he told me I would have to go to the store and that there was a slim chance that I might find it there. Their store is about a half hour drive from my house, and so I told him that I would just shop somewhere else, which is what I did, and I found a better vanity. It cost a bit more, but the customer service makes up for it. I hate walking through IKEA, although I do like the meatballs....See Moretartanmeup
