tongue and groove or boards?

What is the most common thing to use for a wall like this green accent wall behind the sinks? And what do people use behind it? Drywall? Is this a high cost option?

I'm guessing probably just square edged boards.

It's a higher cost item due to extra material and labor.

There are a number of ways to install. You can hang drywall, insulate with rock insulation, and install boards or tongue and groove boards over it. The insulation is optional. Another, less expensive way would be to hang black tar paper on the walls attached to the studs and hang your shiplap over it. This can be insulated for noise issues, too. The absolute least expensive way would be to just attach the shiplap boards to the studs. But, noise and light between rooms will filter through.

You don't have to use tongue and groove boards. I've got regular #1 pine boards hung on studs. I bought the house this way. If it were me doing it, I'd use tongue and groove over drywall and insulation in the bathroom walls. But, the original builder didn't ask my opinion.

(If using pine, be sure to apply stain block paint to boards before you paint them. Knot hole sap will find a way through, otherwise.)

Hmmmmmm...Let me take another little look up there,,,, Fiberglass roof I am thinking this is a simi flat roof with a little fall to the outside, the sleeper part I get and I am thinking your worried about leaves and general dirt stuff falling in between the decking gaps and causing... thats the part I dont get what problems do think will happen??? in other words what is the big question mark. Anyway with roof top decks I never go T&G material for a lot of reasons. Do not buy eon,or trex at all, ever, dont even look at them in a passing way, forget it,no, nadda,noppers, nix. With stringers even on 16'' centers 1x6 ipe,garapa,tigerwood, TT solid 5/4, in fact any of the upper grade decking will do fine. Defintley install the strong 1/8'' gap. If your completly cant sleep,think about it all the time kinda thing about the question marks far as stuff geting inbetween the cracks,open up the gap to 3/8'' or 3/4'' and run a garden hose thru them every now and then. In any install T&G materials drain the same way any other kind of decking will,thru the gap,dont expect a T&G material to be any different than face fastened far as debris goes. John Mon

Stain, White Wash, or Paint for clear cedar T&G exterior ceiling

I am looking for advice on the colour and type of stain/paint to use on our new exterior tongue and groove clear cedar ceiling. The natural colour does not work with our choice of new siding. I'd like it to be lighter in colour - on the greige side, I think...? Or white washed? Any special instructions for white washing tongue and groove cedar that is already installed?

thanks homechef. I would prefer boards myself because tongue and groove seems a bit flimsy to me. But my husband argues that boards will warp and move as they age, causing gaps between which then would contrast with paint colors. Any solution for this? He says particle board of the variety used for trim. Is there something about this option that I should know?

We used painted poplar shiplap over drywall. If you use wood remember to prime the back of the boards as well to combat warping. Good luck!

Boards? There's a gazillion types of milled lumber...ship lap, tongue and groove, butt joint, yada yada.

If you are going to use any of these as finish materials in the interior you should first install taped gypsum board against the wall studs. Unless you don't care about crawly critters and their friends.

Lumber materials expand and contract with moisture, humidity and temperature. So you must have all sides and edges of each piece backprimed before installation to reduce the movement.

Regardless of preparation, you can expect movement throughout each year, with joints expanding and contracting. This is especially true in high humidity areas like baths and kitchens.

Since wood is an organic material, high humidity may also encourage mold, unless you exercise a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule.

I certainly wouldn't call a wood wall finish in a bathroom a "green wall", unless you are referring to either paint color or unattended mold condition.

We used nickel gap in our family room, pre primed for a cleaner look. We used tongue and groove on porch ceilings and in master on the ceiling and it isn't flimsy. Depends on the wood I guess. Neither is cheap but I think tongue and groove was more.

I agree with the creepy crawly comment. In our house, it's on drywall in most areas. There is one small interior wall that I see where someone cheated and didn't put anything, but given the location as a closet passageway into the home office, it doesn't affect much of anything. I only found it when the light was on in one room and it was dark in the other.

We have the nickel gap system. One thing that they did that I believe was smart is drywall only in the bathrooms and closets. I have a lot of shiplap. It's only on the first floor and the stairway and upstairs hall.
