And I thought I was the only one! After our remodel I pitched lots of old or poorly fitting clothes. Thinned out my wardrobe to essentials -- so much that I thought I could live out of my closet exclusively. (I had had shelves installed and use baskets for underwear and socks.) I tried it for a few months and didn't need the dresser at all. Free-cycled it to a neighbor's son in his first apartment. This left room for the blanket chest I had always wanted. Our son-in-law is a cabinet maker and he built it to my specifications, complete with cedar lining and soft-close hinges so our granddaughter wouldn't smash her fingers if she peeked inside. It matches a dresser our SIL built for DH. I love this arrangement and will never go back to a dresser. A bit OT -- I had a brainstorm one day that allowed me to eliminate the panties basket: I made two 14" open-ended cylinders for panties. One is black, the other ivory. About the diameter of a small tuna can. Each has a ribbon loop on the top and elastic snugs the bottom. I stuff fresh panties in the top and pull them out of the bottom as I need them. I usually wear simple black or nude panties -- these "underwear dispensers" hang from a hook inside the closet.

Hi Bonnie! We only have the one dresser in our bedroom, as our closet is fitted with drawers. Here's pic of it. Please excuse the roll of drawer paper propped up there. Capodimonte lamp is one that my grandparents had in their home when I was a kid. I inherited it. Candleholders are antiques that I bought years ago. Framed pics are of DH and Me when we were little and one of my grandmother, taken for her debutante ball (back in the 1910, I think). My DD loves it there because I look like my grandmother . . . although minus the Gibson Girl hairdo and gown! We really do use the teacart every morning, M-F, to hold our breakfast tray over next to our bed, as we eat watching the early morning news. Our dobie sleeps propped up on the dresser . . . spoiled thing! ;~P

" Well meaning "helpers" can also accidentally toss stuff you wanted to keep" yes, sadly that happens. with Jed I think I have one of the best tho. he sure keeps his eye out for things. he's even come outside to ask me about something, yesterday he brought out a small painting that was in the trash in the bathroom. don't know how it got there but he asked if I really meant to throw it out. one thing is good, and that's that he knows I give him lots of things. I left behind a poster of ET (rolled up and in excellent condition) - I thought that I should surprise my son (now 45) and send it to him... then decided I had enough to do. left it on the floor. Jed brought it to me... I told I'd thought about sending it to Shane. he said ET was before his time (sure was) and I knew what he was thinking - and I told him ' you go ahead and take it for your little guy ' (3 yrs old). my shane would have laughed at seeing it but Jed's little one will be tickled pink over it! that's a better use for it. also, in the dresser last week he saw a very small little stone in a drawer and thought it might be part of an earring. bless his heart. I doubt it was to anything important (by the color of it) but I wasn't about to discourage him. I thanked him for the great find and put it in 1 of the tiny drawers at the top of the chest that matched the dresser (it was already over here). yesterday he also brought me a small box of silverware (real silver) - I think he wasn't sure I knew it was there - and I didn't. but he wanted me to know what he found. I appreciate him watching for things. what he did with the stuff left all over the floor was to rake it with one of those heavy iron pronged rakes... so as he pulls it he can see what filters thru it. I found some lost recipe cards that way. I was standing by talking to him as he raked - and whoa! those little recipe cards came out of another stack that I didn't see them in (I looked). they'd evidently fallen behind a table I had in the kitchen to hold the mw. I didn't know what in the world happened to them. was hoping some of them would show up. I'm missing more of them but am still hoping more will show up in a box. I have already bought a pk of new recipe cards because I knew if I ever found them (over there) I'd want to rewrite them on new/clean cards. I'm using 4x6 now so I can write larger and my old eyes can see easier! btw, that painting wasn't really much - didn't look like anything I'd bought - or would really want - but my thinking not being so clear and I couldn't remember right then if it came from one of the kids so figured I should keep it til later cause I might remember. it was very small so not like it takes up much space considering all the other stuff coming over here. if I don't remember by the time I get to it again, i'll give it to Jed. He even found a small piece of cardboard with a scribbled face on it (maybe 8x8) and he tucked it into a box (I saw him) - I know he was thinking it might have been from one of the kids or gkids. if I'd have found it I probably wouldn't have kept it - but again I wasn't about to discourage him. i'll take a photo of it and send to the kids to see if either claims it! I'm making a list of things he's mentioned or might want so my son can give to him if they (my kids) don't want it. he should give Jed first option on things. I've already given him a dish set for 4 (for his cabin), Christmas glassware set, my large corningware pot (too heavy for me these days), a screen door I'd bought new but never used (and the doors here both have metal security 'screen doors'), and numerous other things including the old appliances from here (he takes in for $s which is what he will do with the metal from here after the price goes back up on it). I'm going to give him my blender (once I gather up the parts for it). I have 2. and a half bottle of whisky (from when my son was here). didn't plan to keep it here til he comes back! I usually check with Jed about things in case he can use it before I take stuff to the GW. and the big saw I have - that's his when all 'sawing' is done around here. oh, and he found a penny (I couldn't tell - too dirty!) that he says is from the 40s maybe and doesn't look to have any copper in it. i'll have to look at it thru my magnifying glass and with my glasses on this week. I'd have just thought it was a dirty dime... Debbie - did you get moved yet?
