When to take off the winter protection?
Comments (10)When is your area's last average freeze date? I'm in a somewhat warmer area than you are (Zone 6) and my last average freeze date is April 20--which means that sometimes it could freeze even after April 20, but other times we have no freezes after April 10. There is also the question of how hardy your roses are. If they are borderline in your area, then you better keep them protected as long as possible. If your roses are hardy to Zone 5, you shouldn't need to do a lot for protection or worry much about last average freeze date. The only protection I give my roses is the leaves that blow into my garden from my neighbors' oak trees on the east and south sides. Where the leaves have piled up thick and heavy, I am right now taking off the top layers. I'll be doing that off and on for the next 6 weeks--but I usually reserve back a couple bags of dry leaves just in case a late hard freeze is forecast and some of the marginally hardy roses might need a little protection. I will be moving a couple roses here shortly. I don't see why you couldn't move some of yours and wrap them back up afterwards if you think they still need extra protection. Good luck, Kate...See MoreI think I Fried my Hybrid Teas
Comments (5)I did just about the same thing with my Festive Jewel, I sprayed neems on her while she was in full sun and her leaves started to turn brown. I have left her alone and she may not be to beautiful leaf wise but she is still blooming for me and sending out new leaves. I would just let mother nature take over....See MoreMy pot-pet red Hybrid Teas
Comments (5)OMG, Christopher! Look at all those red HT roses!! Wonderful pics. Thank you. I love your red roses with purple clematis. (My two favorite colors.) I have yet to acquire Chateau de Clos Vougeot but REALLY want to get one from RVR after I make room in my driveway pot garden, and I would love to grow another Guinee and Don Juan someday. Obviously, I completely grok your dark red rose mania. I currently have Mr. Lincoln, Black Magic, Black Bacarra, Deep Secret, Velvet Fragrance, Nigrette, Barcelona, Black Gold, Dusky Maiden, and Red Pinocchio. A couple of these are total pains, but I pamper them anyway. Lucky little buggers! Carol...See MoreTea-like hybrid teas
Comments (29)I collect Old Garden Tea roses and I rarely see any rose in a different class that has the same degree of "exquisite delicacy" that is shown in a Tea rose blossom. The few roses that I do grow with my Tea roses that are suitable for a colder climate include: Tea Hybrids: which have one Tea rose parent; Souvenir de la Malmaison' which although is sold as a Bourbon is fully 1/2 a Tea class rose. Divine pink-flushed creamy blooms, the plant is floriferous. I planted 3 of these in a triangle at a local public Old Rose garden, which makes a mass of fragrant roses. One of the very best of the Old Garden Roses in my opinion.. Mrs. Herbert Stevens, is very lovely; the climbing form can be grown as a self standing "tree rose", c. 6-7 feet tall, with one thick central trunk, the delicate blossoms have the natural artlessness of a true Tea. Mlle. Cecille Brunner' a Polyantha-Tea with dainty blossoms and a great fragrance, Spray Cecille Brunner is an excellent plant that can be grown as a hedge, or as a self standing "Tree rose" . Early Hybrid Teas that retain some Tea rose character; Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria' a white rose with a sweet graceful bloom style. Not pure white, it has some lemon tints to it according to conditions. 'La France' 'Snowbird' nice fragrance and a lovely bloom shape. Mrs. Jules Bouche' is as floriferous as a Tea rose and has a nice mixed floral scent. The Pernetiana class has a few roses that would mingle well with Tea roses. Duquesa de Pernananda' (sp?) reminds me of the Tea, Anna Olivier', but with richer hues. If I could not grow my beloved Tea roses, I would grow the roses listed above. Good luck on your quest to find cold climate Tea like roses....See MoreDavid Moore zone 6a nw new jersey
