Moving - what do local movers in your area charge?
Comments (6)We'll be moving in about a month. The price we got, for 3 men, for about 5 hours work, including the fuel charge, etc, etc--was about $750 (109/hour). Mind you, that's for them just to move the 'big stuff'--our living room set, one bedroom, large dining room set, refrigerator and a few miscellaneous items like the snowblower and gas grill (which is roughly the size of a VW--LOL). We're pretty happy with that price, and didn't bother to check around--couldn't really come in much lower, and this was a very established company. But the price can vary greatly, depending upon where you live, how much you'll be moving, and how far you'll be moving. The mover we spoke with was talking about moving jobs that he had to charge $20,000 for, because of the time/distance involved. We've moved (or will be moving) all the stuff we can manage, since we have a pick up and an FJ--and we've been working on shifting stuff gradually for the past 4 years. Oh, and if it makes a difference in your comparison, we live in NJ, where EVERYthing is generally pretty expensive, anyway....See MoreWhat to tip movers?
Comments (14)I tipped the 5 guys that moved me $20 each. The move to the new house was only 3 miles away, and they spent about 7 hours for the move. There were no stairs for them to climb. It was a really simple move. One guy I would have preferred not to tip at all, but you can't do that when all 5 of them are there looking at you. The one guy was a young kid who kept showing off how tough he was by lifting things on his own when he really should have accepted help. This backfired on him (and me) when he dropped a leather loveseat on the driveway, scuffing up one of the wooden feet, and scuffing up the leather on the back of the chair. I guess could have called the moving company and complained, but I didn't want to get the guy fired. Actually, 2 or 3 of them were competing with each other to see who could lift the most - but he was really the worst. Even though I did appreciate their help, and even though I did tip them - I will also never hire them again or reccommend them. They were nowhere near as professional as I had expected....See MoreThe movers are scheduled, now what to do?
Comments (3)Time to go through drawers and empty/pack/toss all but the essentials. I know I have stacks of magazines, more t-shirts than I'd ever wear in a few weeks, dressy shoes that are there for special occasions only. They say that only about 20% of your closet is actually worn on a regular basis. I'd also start packing books which are very heavy, and office supplies and family photos....See MoreHow Much to Tip Movers
Comments (10)I packed her kitchen and bathrooms, but we hired movers for Mom's furniture, art, collectibles 3 weeks ago. Less than half the household contents went (destination, retirement apartment 60 miles away). I'd organized so all items in master bedroom went, all in the family room, office, one major piece each from two additional bedrooms. So I could give concise and clear instructions and waste no time - theirs or mine. They brought us coffee when they arrived (Starbucks), provided their own lunch and water, declined beverages I had for them (which was bottled water, soft drinks). I tipped them 5% total bill each, in cash ($45). I hope it was enough, we couldn't have survived the day without them ;)...See Moreshare_oh
