Barker Cabinets sample cabinet came today!!!
Comments (13)Thanks for all of your comments. We put the sample cabinet together last night and my husband was duly impressed with the quality of their cabinetry and the precision of their construction. He is an engineer by trade and a woodworker as a hobby so he has been very concerned with the flimsy quality and lack of preciseness of so many different cabinet lines we checked out. Barker is a definite go and I'm so happy about it!!! williamsem...thank you so much for the reminder! I have included all the fillers and finished end panels, scribe molding, light rail and crown...it has been quite a process that has included many, many different measuring sessions! CEFreeman...any tips you can pass along will be GREATLY appreciated!! I'm drinking my coffee this morning and going over the order one last time. Then the wait begins. There's still a lot of work to do in the kitchen before they cabinets can be installed so I'm sure the time will go fast. I'll be sure to post a reveal when it's all done!!...See MoreBarker cabinet doors with Ikea cabinets? Has anyone done this?
Comments (11)You may absolutely purchase Ikea cabinets without doors either online or in person, whichever you prefer. Each cabinet is really a collection of, say,10 items, each with a part #. At the store, a kitchen person will add the cabinet you want in a Harlig door, for example, and then go in and just remove the door, leaving the other 9 items in your cart. If you go this route, double check size, configuration, and frame color (birch or white) while they're typing it in. Mistakes happen. If you're doing this online, simply select the item you want in the configuration you want, and click on the "Show dimensions, weight and article numbers" link. Then copy each article number into the search button at the top of the page, and the item will appear. Buy it online. Repeat with the next 9 part #s. When you come to a door, just don't buy it. GW is great for some types of info, but you should really check out the Ikeafans web site for more guidance. In order to use Barker doors, you will need the measurements for the doors. You can find these on the Ikea web site if you look hard enough, or you can check out the Ikeafans link below. You'll have to look up info on hinge cup cut out size and location. Barker will cut them wherever you want them, but you need to know what to select/ask for. It is worth comparing the cost of a Barker Cabinet vs. Ikea/Barker Door. For ordinary cabs there's not that big a savings to be had with Ikea. For tall pantry/oven cabinets, or corner cabinets, the difference is substantial. Also, when ordering through Barker Door, make sure to take note of the maximum door width that differs among styles. Good Luck! Here is a link that might be useful: Measurements...See MoreMy Barker Cabinets are here!!!
Comments (136)Chad, that last post is the definition of "tl;dr," 'kay? LOL Also, I was not aware that you could mic-drop more than once, or that you could declare mic-drops yourself. Perhaps it has something to do w/messages disappearing and reappearing. (Is GW like a dryer that occasionally eats socks? ;) Seriously though, I did actually read it! :) Took me two days. I do have some comments about it. Hopefully they won't be as long as yours, but I'm not betting on it. ;) (Everyone, just go ahead and start "pot + kettle = black"ing me now. ;) Jokes are fun. Look, I'm a dingaling who likes to joke around too. Tips are also nice. However, solutions to customer problems are better. So, instead of rambling humor and bragging about how awesome your stuff is (I think we all know it's good or we wouldn't have purchased cabinets from you in the first place), I would rather hear you say that you have read this thread thoroughly, you are now aware of certain problems that seem to be recurrent in the manufacture of Barker cabinets (whether you personally think they are rare or not), and you are looking into said problems and will be bringing all of this up at the next company meeting and investigating ways of eliminating (or, at least, minimizing) the problems to the best of your ability. I think this ties in nicely w/the concepts you mentioned: "make the customer happy regardless of all other factors" and "I won't sell you anything that I would not put into my own home." After all, if you maximize customer satisfaction, that should help maximize revenues as well. It's an excellent outcome for all involved. These ongoing problems are causing construction delays for your customers, which could potentially cost them money, and it's also taking an emotional toll on them. (Not having a kitchen for an extended period of time is no fun at all, even w/o unforseen problems factoring into it.) It might not be costing you a lot to remake & ship out replacement parts, but I'm sure it's not helping either, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's slowing down production sometimes. Making sure this is kept to a minimum saves you and your customers time and money, keeps them coming back and recommending you to other people, and keeps your reputation intact. That's the kind of success that I think any business would like to achieve. You know, according to a lot of people who worked w/him, Steve Jobs was not cool at all. He was a complete jerk. (I would have used stronger language there but I'm trying to stay in PG mode today. ;) Despite his highly successful business model, I hope you aren't like him, Chad. Actually, you seem like a pretty nice guy, so please stay that way. I just think maybe you need to defend yourself less and listen to your customers here more. They are good, decent people who are happy to get great value for their money and I don't think they dislike you or have it in for you. They just want to know that you are listening, care about the problems they're having, and, going forward, are willing to be proactive in fixing those problems. Well, that was longer than I'd hoped for. I'll try to provide only one sentence replies on GW from now on. :] P.S. Awesome hood, designsaavy. Every little bit of progress in my kitchen always made me squee. XD I adore that entire kitchen in the inspiration pic! :)...See MoreBarker Doors vs. Semihandmade vs. Scherr's in IKEA kitchen : RESULTS
Comments (134)@jdesign_gw and anyone else wanting to tackle hinge drilling affordable. While the 3-in-1 Blum drill is great, it's not diy affordable. One extra step, but not bad if you're not doing this everyday. I did this and painted 100+ doors in my house. For the 35mm bore hole. https://www.amazon.com/Kreg-Tool-Company-KHI-HINGE-Concealed/dp/B01JQ74FMQ/ref=asc_df_B01JQ74FMQ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309763090755&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11433647920691291326&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1026411&hvtargid=pla-423472884902&psc=1 For the 8mm alignment hole. This is used after drilling the 35mm hole. INSERTA Boring Template Blum 65059A https://www.woodworkerexpress.com/hinge-accessories-inserta-boring-template-0-type-inserta-boring-template.html Both can be used with a hand drill if desired. No adjusting out errors. That was taken out of context....See Morejanedoe2012
