Vote: 15 inch uppers or 18 inch uppers with 30 inch deep counters
Comments (2)I am short (5'1"). I tried playing with how it would feel to have 30" deep counters. Using my range I am reminded of why it wouldn't be a good idea for me. The range is 28.5 inches deep. I have to really stretch to clean the back guard and it isn't as far away as the wall. I think I would go with the deeper uppers if you don't mind things getting lost in the rear of them. Reaching over 30" counters to a 12" upper would be fruitless for me. As it is now I can only reach the front row of glasses on the second shelf of my 12" over 24" cabs now. I do wonder what prevents you from putting in a full height pantry on the 18 foot wall? That's a nice long space....See MoreWhich Cabinet Brands Offer Deeper/15'' Uppers?
Comments (10)Omega Dynasty also offers 15" deep cabinets (we have them), but they are semi-custom and may also be out of your price range. I wish we could have had deeper counters, but b/c of several factors were unable to. Alwaysfixin...if you're pulling the base cabinets 3" out from the wall and getting a standard counter overhang of 1-1/2", then you will actually have 28-1/2" counters...even better! Transitional...deeper counters are great for added workspace...you'd be surprised the difference just 3" makes in work space! One of our peninsulas has a 27" deep counter and it seems a lot deeper than the standard....See MoreIKEA sektion base cabinets: 5/10/15, 10/10/10, or 15/15?
Comments (20)Our kitchen is not fully assembled yet (we're waiting on the countertop install) so we haven't fully fleshed out the drawer uses. We started by looking at work areas then made our best guess as to the most useful drawer combinations - not what was necessarily aesthetically pleasing. We found that 10-inch drawers seem to be the most useful. Out of the nine base cabinets there are nineteen 10-inch drawers (there is a tray cab with a door, and the sink cab with a trash pullout and a door). We did put a combo of 5-5-10-10 drawers in one cabinet. The 5-inch drawers hold utensils. In fact we just purchased the Ikea bamboo trays for those. As others have done, we also have two 15-inch drawers for appliances. In only one instance do we use an inner drawer. That's the spice drawer where the 10-inch holds the commonly used spices and the inner holds the less often used items. Our rule has always been "open and get", not "open, open, get" - way too inefficient for us ;-) As an aside we found that the Ikea Variera spice trays do not fit neatly in a 24" wide cabinet drawer (which was disappointing). We'll probably end up with non-slip drawer mats....See MoreHusband ordered 15 inch deep upper Ikea cabinets-- too deep??
Comments (20)We have 15" deep uppers on one side of our Kitchen with standard depth base cabinets (24"D) and counters (~25.5"D) - we have no issues and I don't notice them when I'm working in front of them - and we're a tall family (I'm 5'10" - the shortest!) We have 12" deep uppers on the other side of the Kitchen and I wish we had gone with 15" deep on that side as well! I work primarily on the side with the 15" deep uppers (our Prep & Cooking Zones). Regarding the depth - it should be 18" from the bottom of the light rail to the finished counter so standard small appliances will fit under the upper cabinets. Most countertop small appliances (mixers, coffeemakers, etc.) are designed to fit with an 18" backsplash. If you want to go higher, consider whether you can reach the cabinets (as was mentioned earlier). I probably wouldn't go much higher if you plan to sell in a short time. Lily'sMom - IKEA uses a rail system for mounting cabinets....See Morecaligirl5
