Metal ID tags
Comments (6)Interesting point Henry, I totally overlooked that. While many could have deteriorated away it would be interesting to know as we have found much older, and somewhat similar, items in the ground. With the owners permission *chuckle* I dug around both roses at the house this post was intended for and got nothing but a bunch of stabs from thorns...these bushes should be classified as weapons! The smell from these bushes, which have not been in bloom for 2 - 4 months, is amazing. Can't wait till late winter to get some cuttings. Thanks for the info folks....See MoreMetal Tags
Comments (33)Rather than use a stake with a tag attached, I ended up using black plastic "gutter guard" screening. I make a circle around the base of the rose using UV cable ties to close the loop. I then attach the label to the cutter guard. The picture below may help make it clear. https://picasaweb.google.com/HAKuska/HenrySRoses#slideshow/5070748980103566482 I feel that this worked better than a stake as I had the same problem that seil had: "My problem with tags that stick in the soil and not tied to the rose is that they seem to disappear on me." I suspect that deer or other "critters" dislodged the stakes. Here is a link that might be useful: picture of use of cutter guard...See MoreWANTED: Cheap source of metal tree tags?
Comments (3)keithruck- Generally, everything I need for gardening I can find at a really good price at Steuber Distributing Company in Snohomish. Have you tried them? And if you want really cheap, you can always use a tin snips on aluminum cans to make your own tags. If you want something classier, you can also probably get thin aluminum sheet at a metal supplier and cut that up....See MoreWhy use metal tags?
Comments (6)I too use metal tags ... I have found: 1. Plastic tags marked with permanent marker last 1/2 a season at most w/o re-marking ... the sun bleaches out the marker quickly 2. I find the furry critters in the area love plastic tags ... so much so they take them home with them ... I don't know why. To this day I make a map of the orchard each time I put my containers out as I can guarantee I will be missing tags by the end of the season. 3. I now use simple copper tags that are wired to the tree with copper wire. These tags are easily scribed by putting the tag on a soft surface (a magazine) and writing on the tag with a ball point pen. They are permanent and I have not lost one yet. -Steve...See MorePrettypetals_GA_7-8
