gallicas list includes a few plants that are really sun plants ... which means.. that her trees are limbed up.. to provide a canopy ... but allow a lot of ambient light ... defining shade is near impossible ... what will grow in any given spot depends on whether it can derive enough energy to convert into food ... and under trees that usually begins with the canopy ... i grow hosta ... a LOT of hosta.. i have been in hundreds of hosta gardens.. all are technically 'shade' .. some gardens are so dark.. you need a flashlight ... and eventually even the shade plants start to fail ... e.g. under a norway the canopy is so thick that barely any light gets under it ... [though that example is complicated by the norways aggressive root structure which is only dealt with by sudden death, with a chainsaw ] ... other 'shade' gardens ... are so bright.. you still need your sunglasses ... the point.. is that all you can do.. is try various things ... and see what will grow under your given trees ... back to gallica ... note they mention roses.. but SPECIES roses... which are much more tolerant.. since most only bloom once per year.. and otherwise are just a big green leafy bush.. which can generate the energy to live/thrive ... if you were to try a hybrid tee rose.. which blooms repeated over the season .. with minimal leaves[comparatively speaking] .. the plant will probably live .. but your flower production.. if any.. will suffer ... if one could not dig holes.. and garden under trees.. then there would be no hosta gardens.. nor shade gardeners .. eh ... if you are going to stay in this house a long time.. and you really think you will be encouraging the gardening bug.. you really ought to start by considering whether you should invest in raising the canopy of your trees.. and perhaps.. even getting rid of trees that will not cooperate ... it is much easier to have tree work done.. BEFORE you build the garden.. rather than later ... [this is the hosta lovers biggest regret, in hindsight] if in fact you do have to remove a tree.. simply replace it with a better tree.. mother earth.. net zero ... no guilt ... good luck ken

In the last few years deer lost their last vacant lot in the neighborhood and I had to experiment to see what I could keep in my garden. Our deer will leave basil and other herbs alone. They leave chrysanthemums, snapdragons, irises, daffodils, butterfly weed, melampodium, little firecracker zinnias and gomphrena alone, stepping over them to nibble on a remaining rose bush and lilies. Creeping phlox is safe, but garden phlox is a treat. In dry shade hellebores and euphorbia flourish. Cyclamen bloom in the fall and have ground covering foliage in the winter. Purple shamrocks are left alone. Dragon wing begonias bloom all summer. Liriope grows like crazy. As for shrubs, deer leave my azalea and my camelia alone, preferring "prune" the nearby knockout roses. They also ignore my striped zebra grass. My hollies were removed before the deer lost their habitat. Most of the deer repellant products have to be reapplied too often for Arkansas where we may get daily rains. You miss a day and your garden is gone. You might ask at local hair salons. I've heard that human hair is a better deterrent than dog hair. Yes, our deer laugh at the neighbor's mastiff. They even watch us watch them through our patio window.

Even though it is no longer in print and a few years old, "The Fragrant Year" by Helen Van Pelt Wilson and Leonie Bell is one of the treasured gems in my personal library. Your public library should have this book on the shelf or they can obtain it for you through the inter-library loan system. A second method of approach is to search the Plant Finder section of the Kemper Center for Home Gardening at the wonderful Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. It is an excellent searching tool to find the plants you wish to add to your garden. I do hope that you'll make use of it from time to time. 3. Of course, as noted above by several folks, "fragrance" is dependent upon a considerable range of factors. One early summer, all of my old-fashioned roses came into bloom within several weeks of each other and because of the climate, weather conditions, etc., the whole garden - I was then living in Peoria - smelled like a wonderful perfume factory in bloom. At other times, one had to draw close to smell the same roses. 4. If you live in northern Illinois - around the Chicago area, you have the chance of visiting the Chicago Botanic Gardens; the Morton Arboretum and its wonderful Sterling Morton Library, and if you don't mind the drive, the Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners, WI - just SW of Milwaukee.
