I do not have Ronde de Bordeaux, but I do have a young Violette de Bordeaux which is growing like crazy. My neighbor, who knows his figs, said that V.deB.'s figs were my best tasting, and it has not hit its stride yet. Don't forget, my figs are all pot cultured, not growing in the ground.

The only thing with VdB is it ripens about the same time as Panache, you could alternate pruning to push one crop back a little if a longer season matters to you, or find an earlier variety instead of VdB. Hardy Chicago would be good and you might be able to find it locally or as a small/cheap plant online, the same type is also available under various names, Burpee sells one named Letizia.

Do container figs taste the same as in-ground ones?

Not sure about the container taste comparison. I grow VdB in the ground in Napa and its a dwarf, perfect for the location and limited space it is in. Fruit quality is excellent. Similar tast to BlackM, but smaller.

Hi guys! What is the difference in taste and growth between Negronne and VdB figs? I have Negronne container figs and they were delicious last year, grow fast as well, it was only their second year of fruiting.

VdB type figs and RdB are very nice dark berry tastes very similar.

The deciding factors I see are;

- RdB is unifera (1 crop only),

- the Vdb is bifarous (2 crops) and produce abundant brebas.

- RdB is cold tolerant have mine in ground Zone 6. grows and produces well.

- VdB are not cold tolerant and need to be grown in containers here in zone 6.

I have small dormant RdB and VdB trees that can be easily shipped. $29 each and also fig cuttings for $7 each.

Since I already have a Panache; does it have a different taste compared to VdB?

They are totally different. VdB has dark berry intense taste.

Panache is also very nice but is a green fig with light berry taste also ripens later.

Why not have both, buy the Vdb and graft an RDB cutting to it.
