Definitely try a Dobie pad and plain water before you go for the vinegar/razor blade. I've been using a Dobie pad on my granite counters to remove soap scum and mineral deposits near the faucet for 15 years. A couple swipes with the damp Dobie pad, then dry with a paper towel, done.

I would never, ever, use vinegar on my expensive granite. It's acidic, not safe for granite, and there is no need to use it.

If you find the damp Dobie pad doesn't work (but I think it will), there are alkaline cleaners available that are safe for granite, like Granite Gold. The cleaner must be alkaline in order not to etch the stone.

Sophie, my water is just slightly hard. Not worthwhile to do a water treatment plan. It would be rare in my city for someone to have whole house water treatment plan to deal with some pesky white spots and mineral deposits that come off with just a bit of elbow grease. I understand that some regions have very hard water, but your recommendation needs to take into account degree.

So vinegar is not ok on granite? I use a vinegar mix to clean most of my house including my granite. Should I stop? My DD is sensitive to many chemicals, so we try to avoid harsh chemical cleaners.

Vinegar will etch carbonates. There are lots of non granites being sold as geological granites that contain carbonates. There are very few actual granites being sold. Maybe 5%. Using acids or extreme bases of any type in stone risks damage. You may get away with it. And you may not.

Vinegar is fine for granite, Mark_Rachel. If your stone was going to etch from vinegar, it would have already. So if it's working and you're happy, there's no reason to change.

JC, if you let us know what type of stone you have, we can give you better advice. I haven't seen many carbonate rocks sold as granites (however, quartzites often are mislabeled carbonates), but nonetheless it'd be helpful to know what type of stone we're talking about.
