Help with Home Exterior for a Nantucket Cottage like Interior
Comments (12)Teacats - I am so happy to hear you say that you think those two styles - exterior and interior - might work together. I am picking my way through your links and I can't thank you enough for the ideas. It is so helpful. Jack Arnold has some incredible designs, just up my alley. Caminnc - YES, YES, YES....that is EXACTLY the interior style I am going to try to emulate in my new home. The exterior is the sticking point......See MoreDoes painted and stained furniture dictate a decorating style?
Comments (16)Just a quick history. The reason I went this route was because someone posted a pic of their new BR set. I realized it looked just like what I have but without those da** birds! Several people thought I was crazy and didn't understand what "eagles" I was talking about! I had pictures of breaking off the eagles but I must have deleted them, and truthfully, posting pictures on this board is a nightmare for me-there must be an easier way but I haven't found it. First (and most important), look at the hardware. The spot in the front where the handles fit in must be 1 piece to the back. Sometimes the screw holes are in the wings and the handle fits in to another spot. The "eyelets" should be 1 piece with the eagle soldered to it. I tried several methods at first until I found the easiest one for me. Anyway. Be careful (you don't want to snap the handle). I took a vice grip at the edge of the wing and kept bending it until the handle released (here's where you need to be VERY careful). I took off the handle and then kept bending the wings until the eyelet released. The other side is easy because the handle is off. You then have 2 plain brass eyelets with a handle. I actually found it easier for the rest of them to attach the handle to my vice and took a little hacksaw to cut through the first eagle wing to release the handle (less chance of snapping the handle). Does this make sense? If not, I can take a couple of pictures and post on the HGTV board, much easier to post pictures. Good luck and let me know....See MoreHave you ever hired an interior decorator/designer?
Comments (12)Anne- I also was surprised at the questions she asked and how she specifically designed the room around the answers. She asked: How is the room used? Entertaining friends and reading. She then made sure the lighting was correct for reading and the end tables were appropriate for every person to set their drink, and that we had the most seating that we could manage. She wanted to know about our favorite cities, trips. We love New Orleans and she found a chandelier made by a local artist after his love of New Orleans named the New Orleans. She wanted to know our favorite colors. We love blues and terracotta. She did the room in blue, dusty teal and beiges. She wanted to know the things in nature that we love. I feed a family of deer every night so we properly cleaned some antlers they so generously shed in our yard. I also love turtles. She found resin shells that look completely real. She also took into account that we like contemporary, but our home is traditional with a mediterranean feel (done by the previous owner) so she tried to blend everything. She took into account where we are from and added elements to remind us of California. She had me show her the furniture that I like and went from there. She also brought two other Designers by to get their opinions. She also recommended plants and picture frames and shared tricks of the trade on end table height and width, drapes and accessories. It truly was a great experience....See MoreDo weathered hardwood floors dictate decor style?
Comments (9)From what I could see on the small sample it's a light grayish which will probably limit you quite a bit more than a more natural brownish color. The all-gray look is dead and gone now and it's more about color, which really gives you a lot more options. The grayish tones will probably fight with any warm colors, and a room with only cool colors or black and white will be very limiting and one-dimensional. I would think you'd be better off with a more versatile color that will allow you to have a wider range of furniture options and decor. I have a feeling the grayish look is something one would tire of after a while because it's trendy rather than classic....See MoreRita / Bring Back Sophie 4 Real
