Art or No Art, that is the question?

My husband and I recently painted our bedroom along with purchasing new furniture and bedding. As you can see from the photos, there is nothing regarding art/photographs on the walls. I would appreciate suggestions. I am thinking of placing a bench under the window or a small chair in the left corner. I would like to hang art on the window wall, but what size, number and how they should be placed in relationship the window? Appreciate any and all input and suggestions.

Have you thought about mounting the tv on the wall and moving the high boy to the window wall?

I've used Saatchi Art ( https://www.saatchiart.com/), which has art in a variety of sizes at a variety of price points. If your budget is more toward prints (though depending on the medium and the artist, original art can be pretty affordable), Great Big Canvas (https://www.greatbigcanvas.com/) or iCanvas ( https://www.icanvas.com/) sell large size prints in a variety of styles. Also, give IRL art shopping a chance. Galleries, art fairs, or the rotating artwork at you local cafe give you a chance to support local artists. I have many pieces from a local studio that provides space and services to disabled adults. There are also student art shows. I know it's more work than the internet, where you can look at hundreds of pieces in an hour and easily filter by price and size, but local shopping is rewarding and supports artists directly.

Sadly, I posted three pictures of the same wall. Below are the two other walls in the room.

This room is north/east facing, a devil to deal with regarding light.

Ingrid, as you can see if I hung drapery panels I would also need to do so behind the bed. It is not a large room and I don’t see moving the bed forward to accommodate draperies. In the past I had woven blinds and valances. I admit I do like these fabric roman shades as they let in a lot of light when open or closed. Thanks for your kind comment on the bedding and you are right regarding practicality. Sadly, I have no before pictures, but the room was not good and we are much happier sleeping and waking in the room now, lol. I do love artwork and hope to be able to hang some in my space.

Localeater, prior to this project the high boy was placed on that window wall to the right. When we purchased new furniture we went from Queen to king and my husband, who usually asks for nothing expressed wanting a nightstand which he previously did not have, incorporating one, which I think looks very nice makes it impossible to place the highboy where you suggested. We also did not have a TV in the room previously and it is used rarely, but once again a request by my husband and as I said above since he asks for so little, I said OK.

    What a lovely bedroom!

It's hard to tell, and I don't know that it will solve the art dilemma, but would the dresser fit under the window? I'm thinking it might balance the room a bit since all the dressers/highboy/doors on the entry side look a bit crowded and the window wall looks pretty empty. Then you could decide what kind of art to put next to the window, if any, and would probably have a place for art where the mirror is now.

If that doesn't work for you, maybe a nice full length mirror between window and closet and some stacked pictures to the right of the window?

Hi really pretty room! The bed is made and layered to perfection. I would not do a bench under that window. Seems like it would crowd the room too much. Sometimes negative space is a good thing. I would do a vertical piece of art on either side of the window. I'm thinking still do drapes on both windows, could you just pull the bed out slightly from the wall to let them fall freely? I think the drapes showing behind the bed would look pretty in a solid linen and give the room a lux hotel feel.

Wow! What a gorgeous bedroom. I agree with the suggestion for curtains. Wait for a piece of art to speak to you for the wall. I would hope for something vertical, on the bigger side, and maybe black and white, a modern-ish photograph in contrast to the beautiful soft color scheme you have, perhaps?

    very nice room

i'd put one piece to the right of the window-closer to where a nightstand is..something i really love..so it'd be the first thing i see in the morning.

where exactly-would depend on the size..and how seen better from the bed..but again my inclination would be toward the nightstand. further from the window

I’m sure I will be kicked off GW after admitting this but I am not in the drapery camp of high and wide. For some reason, the look is not pleasing to my eye, especially when windows are set high on a wall. I have eight foot ceilings, the window is three feet high which leaves 1 foot above and 4 feet below. I just don’t love the empty wall space between the curtain panels at the bottom of the window to the floor. I do agree the room is weighted to one side and I was hoping that adding either the bench (for practical reasons, it would hold the pillows and comforter at night when not in use) or chair along with art would help balance the room. Wouldn’t it be lovely if while decorating a room you could also change around the doors and windows, lol...well you could but not with my budget.

Ishack17 - If I placed a bench under the window I would have as much space on that side of the bed as the other side of the bed with the dresser as the bed is centered on the wall it is on. As I stated not in love with drapes to the floor and there is only 3 foot between the footboard of the bed and the front of the chest of drawers.

I guess I knew when I posted the lack of drapes on the windows would come up, and I don’t disagree with the suggestions, but they are just not for me in this room. I am really looking for what size and placement of art or photography would be good on wall with a 3 X 4 window smack dab in the middle. I love the idea of a large piece and possibly a couple or three smaller pieces on one side that would take up as much room approximately as the one large piece on the other side of the window. Maybe I will try cutting out some paper patterns and tape them to the wall to see if something clicks.

I agree about moving high boy to window wall. Too much white on one side of the room. Add drapes. Your bed is gorgeous! Very lovely room!

I'm a sucker for a beautifully made bed, Yours is terrific. I'd move the dresser under the window. I think that will balance the room a bit better, then you can think on art for either side of the window.

If I move the dresser across the room below the window, what happens to the wall it is currently on and where do I place a mirror in the room?

If you do decide to put the low dresser under the window, the tall dresser could move to where the low dresser is now :-)

Then you could have room for drapes behind the bed and there would t be a large blank area beneath either window :-)

Unless you do Hair/make up at that dresser your don’t actually _need_ the mirror, but you could put mirror, tv, and collection of art you like on the wall at the foot of the bed:-)

Tvs “floating” on walls don’t thrill me, but when it is part of other items it seems ok.

Are you looking for suggestions for art? Do you want something in the fine arts category or the graphic category? Saatchi is my go-to. I discovered UGallery recently and they are very, very nice as well. And if you think something more along the lines of a graphic design, Minted is fabulous. I found some really nice B&W photographs at Saatchi when browsing with your room in mind :-)

Lovely choices so far. I agree with others, that curtains and art will be wonderful, but I’m going to put in a vote for moving the high boy to another room. It may seem functional, but you would really enjoy watching your TV a bit lower perhaps, and hung on the wall!! You would notice the extra space every time you walk around the bed, and the room would feel more current and spacious.

Lovely room. I know you said you didn't want drapes but I'm posting this picture in case it would change your mind at all :)

Even with no drapes, the dresser ties in to the window making it more significant rather than a small square. The same could be done with a narrow console table or shelving that is the width of the window and rising even up to the height of the window.
As far as art, Oly gave a great suggestion. Another idea would be to get two paintings the same size as the window and trim out the window to match the frames of the paintings (or all frameless) to make them look like a tryptich.

If you like what neverbedone shows above (I sure do!), what about draperies for that window and a matching roman shade for above the bed? Esp if you chose fabric close to the wall color, it would blend in and coordinate with drapes but not interfere with your bed headboard.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I would like all the furniture pieces to stay in the room, plus no other spot in the home for them. I am going to move the dresser under the window and move the chest of drawers to the wall where the dresser currently is and see how that looks and feels. TV may have to go as it is rarely used anyway. Not having a mirror over the dresser will be a change for me, lol.

neverbedone - thanks for the picture, it really takes care of the space below the window and looks nice and neat.

Olychick - Could I used draperies that match the current color of my Roman shades? I do want to keep them as they let light into a drab north/east room.

Mrs S. - You are right, moving the chest of drawers would definitely give us some extra space when walking into the room and in front of the bed. TV not used much and it may go out of the room.

RITA - Not looking for actually suggestions for art, just sizes and a pleasing placement on the wall. If I move the furniture pieces as suggested above, I may be able to also hang a piece above the chest of drawers.

Again, thanks for all your suggestions, they have opened my eyes to new possibilities with the room.

OK, don’t faint. after receiving a little chest from my MIL, I moved the furniture around in my room and bought some curtains/drapes. My question is this. When hanging should the outside of the panels be even with the outer edges of headboard? On the other window, although the panels will extend beyond the dresser edges, they should be hung the same width as the headboard wall correct?

This was pine and was a piece of a dining room set. I painted it to match my furniture and use it for jewelry and misc collectibles. Getting this got me off my duff, LOL

Thanks in advance for help and advice!

Hung the drapes, you guys were so right. Bottom of drapes look funny as I have them clipped for a bit to set the pleats. Thanks again for the suggestions, you were so right. Although a long time coming, I’m happy with the end result!
