Help! What kind of range hood do I need?
Comments (2)I have just been through a similar situation. I opted to ask two appliance stores, well respected in my area, for their suggestions. I told them what cooktop I was purchasing and listened to what they suggested. Then I double checked their advice with this forum and my contractor. Then the specs for the hood insert I selected went off to the cabinet maker. Good luck....See MoreNeed help finding 36' range hood liner/fan
Comments (5)I found this a difficult thing to find and purchase also. The manufacturers tend to sell the hoods in components (liner, hood, motor, muffler, etc), which makes things needlessly confusing for consumers. But after much work (and some research on Gardenweb), I found and just purchased this Kobe unit - model IN2636SQB . It is a hood insert that works with a custom hood cover and it has all the components built in so you don't need to buy seperate motors, housings, etc. This one vents to the outside of your house and has multiple speed settings, with the max at 700 CFM. From what I understand, the unit is fairly quiet and has a well designed motor/fan system. And the price is pretty darned close to your budget. With free shipping, it costs $724. Here is the link to the site that I found to have the best price: http://www.thenaturalhome.com/in026.htm And here is a link with a bit more info about Kobe hoods: http://www.thenaturalhome.com/kobehoodinfo.htm Oh, wait a second. I just noticed that if you pay by check rather than credit card, you can get a 3% discount. This brings your price down to $702. Most of the other units we looked at were pricing out in the low to mid 1000's. Hope this helps. Good luck on your search....See MoreWhat kind of range hood with high ceilings?
Comments (16)Hi Greg, That's the conclusion I was coming to a well, since I need the ducting on the kitchen side of the wall. (The other side will be a bedroom, probably the guest room.) I drew the thing four different ways in SketchUp and did 2d images of them.... Chimney hood. I think this one is my favorite because I'm going for a contemporary look: Hood under stacked cabinets like my architect suggested. Overwhelming, but maybe OK if I were going for a more traditional look. A lighter color on the 2nd row might make it a it better, but I couldn't find an easy way to draw that. Lowering the ceiling by a foot might help too, by making the 2nd row shorter. A chase / soffit like tubeman has. I think this one is a close second place visually. I wonder if this would be quieter since the ducting would be less exposed. Just for the heck of it, a hood inside a wooden enclosure. This looks nicer than I thought it would, and it might be nice in a more traditional / transitional design. It's probably not quite right for me, but I need to think about it and go find some real life pictures of this sort of design. Thanks for all the advice! BTW, for anyone wanting to play with SketchUp, the 3d warehouse has some "SketchData" frameless cabinet components that make this sort of thing pretty easy to create. There are even some YouTube videos explaining how to use them. Laura...See MoreI'm trying to acquire a new pro range hood. How do I reduce noise?
Comments (48)@opaone: your numbers, while still higher than my estimates, are at least within an order of magnitude, which in this business probably is reasonable correlation. I agree that this could rise to a significant concern with 10 people really cranking away in a poorly ventilated room. So we're on the same wavelength. @spurpura: you are correct in that I've not invested in air quality monitoring devices or hired PhD's to test my house. But my calculations are grounded in simple physics. The only assumption I have made is in the estimate of CO2 production during exercise, and that was from an academic sports physiology laboratory, authored by a PhD and published in a peer-reviewed journal. If you have figures showing that CO2 production during exercise is roughly 10 times higher than my estimate (which is what would be needed to support your observations), I'll await the citation. There are really only three possible scenarios: You are measuring local concentrations of CO2, presumably close to where you are exhaling. Your PhD consultants and their equipment are wrong. There's an exogenous unidentified source of CO2 infiltrating your exercise room. Enough of that dead end discussion. But...as to your original question, I think you're on the right track. As noted upthread, our 1200 cfm hood runs through a straight run of 10" duct, about 25' upwards, with an attic-mounted Fantech LD10 silencer and FKD10XL blower. It measures 60db (LCS weighted, ear level, roughly 4' from baffles) on high. So we hit the mark you are shooting for and I expect your setup will too. Good luck!...See Morejhmarie
