Is it possible to add another fire brick floor on top of....
Comments (14)Good luck with your decision. I'd like to make a request.... you've had plenty of questions over the last months and I've never noticed that you've gone back on any of your threads and let others know what your decision was or what resolution was come up with from your subs/GC. Much of the helpful nature of GW is when folks who may be in a similar situation as yourself (with buckling floors, plaster medallions, brick problems etc) and then they can see what someone else has come up with and how it worked for them. I first found GW about 6 years ago when I was searching for help with a botched tile job. To that end, if you'd come back to this thread and some of your others and let folks know what you decided and whether it worked to your satisfaction, I'm sure that it would be appreciated by searchers in the future. I'd also love to see some photos of your home on the monthly "how's your build progressing" thread. It seems that all we ever hear about are the dilemmas and I'm sure there's much positive to share and show. :)...See Morefireplace remodel - design idea when removing raised hearth
Comments (3)Whatever you use around the sides and top of the fireplace, you can use on the riser. I took out the raised hearth for my fireplace and used a tile surround. I also tiled the area in front of the fireplace with the same tile as the surround. I believe that you need at least 16" of non-combustible material in front of the firebox. Here is a link that might be useful: some examples of fireplaces with risers...See MoreAnyone remodel their fireplace--remove hearth step?
Comments (4)We redid ours. Whole wall of rock with the ledge running the entire width. It wasn't that expensive, just a bunch of labor which we provided some of. We sledge hammered off the rock. The ledge was slate over cement and had rebar coming out from the walls which needed cutting off. A few hundred for complete demo and rock removal. That left us with the original fire box and we had a fireplace/chimney guy come and do the cement wall board and making sure everything was up to code. $600 and one morning of time. Our tile guy put 12" tiles on the floor in front and then gave me brick around the firebox. He also built me a traditional mantel with electrical wiring in it so I could plug in lamps. $900 and 3 days. Looks very nice and we use it constantly. It gave me room for furniture on that wall and it think those huge rock coverings are just plain ugly. Kind of like many of the 60-70 styles. I live in a very high labor cost area, so your mileage may vary on costs. I thought it was one of the best $$ we spent for improved looks and use of a house feature. Comments (70)Salmon, Idaho...I don't know where that is but it sounds nice! The island could turn 90 degrees...but the fridge probably won't work on the other wall, if you have the door outside. I mean, you could make it fit, but the fridge will be blocking your view of the door..and a bit of the banquette. However, if you don't plan to have an under counter fridge, you might want to make the large fridge more accessible to everyone. What do you plan to have? Do you need a freezer? Would that be downstairs or in the mudroom? Do you want a big range or do you need a wall oven? I just drew a basic layout (popular right now) with fridge and range across from prep sink and clean up on the other wall. Make sure you know how you want to use the space and adjust the layout, accordingly :) Oh, and if you want stools on the opposite side, I believe an island should be 3 1/2' across...and most walkways are 3 1/2' to 4' depending on access to appliances, etc....See MoreMoira
