stainless steel patio furniture near the beach?

We are looking at a set of patio furniture at Crate and Barrel is described as "outdoor grade" stainless steel (legs only). Is this safe to have one mile from the beach? Will it need a rust protectant?

our house is a mile from the ocean, we get a lot of salt "on the breeze" and a lot of foggy day. i'd choose something different.

i can attest to Telescope's marine grade polymer furniture, its been on our deck for 3 years and not a bit of rust, anywhere. i'd also go for a dark color, not white. less glare, and it doesnt show stains from pollen or leaves. no fade on our telescope furniture either. we bring the sunbrella cushions in on sunday night when we leave.

I live about three miles from the Atlantic (Rehoboth Beach Delaware, new here) and have been told many times to stay away from anything but Vinyl or a similar material due to the salt air issue.

I think I would consider an alternate option.

What about rusting and fading? I had a set a few years ago that was black and shiny when new, but faded badly after just a couple years in the sun and was showing signs of rust. It would have cost more to repaint than the value of it, so it was disposed of. I don't think I want anything else that is painted where the paint can fade or peel off with age and exposure to weather, What is on that patio furniture in the photo that gives it that dark color? I have seen some patio furniture in the outdoor seating area of a nearby restaurant looked as if it was made out of stainless steel and looked pretty nice, Their patio was pretty well shaded though. However, I have some stainless steel cookware that has been through the dishwasher a few hundred times and still looks great. If the material can handle the harsh dish washing detergent chemicals, I would think it should be able to handle sun and rain.

Planningnut, seems like we'll have similiar kitchens when all of this is through! I always seem to be able to post on your threads. Our beverage area is also 4' wide and has a beverage fridge. We chose the paneled model of the KitchenAid beverage thread. It has the best of both worlds: glass so you can see in and panel so it matches the cabinets. We bought it about a year ago for ~$900. This picture isn't the best quality, but you'll still get an idea. The windows make it hard to get a good picture of the bar area:

Our sink was an off-the-shelf, 18 gauge undermount sink. Our fabricator welded it into the countertop, and you really can't tell that they were ever separate. No seams, nice clean lines. You can judge for yourself! It's true that you can't integrate just any sink. It has to be a certain thickness and quality in order to weld it onto the countertop, and the sink manufacturers' specs don't necessarily tell the whole story. The sink may have been made out of 18 or 16 gauge steel, but after it's stamped and stretched into shape, it may no longer be that thick. When we first met up with our fabricator, he was complaining about having just welded a Franke sink into a countertop, because there was so little material to work with, the sink having been thinned out quite a bit during manufacture. The sink we ultimately went with happened to be in the fabricator's shop already, so we bought it off him, and he knew he could weld it.

About the only real plus to Costco is their easy to return policy. If the furniture will be exposed to weather year around and depending on where you live, as the salt air off the ocean can wreak havock even the best quality furniture, your options are either get the best quality; meaning $$$ and maintain it and it should last for many years. Or get a inexpensive set and figure on replacing it every couple of years. When your thinking of materials that last in many types of elements, think about the materials that are used when building ocean going boats, like teak and stainless steel. Lower costs options would be redwood, aluminum or powder-coated steel. As you can always replace the cushions.

I'm about 10 miles from the beach, but in florida. I bought 2 fairly expensive outdoor tables with marine grade stainless steel legs (from a different) company - and 1 year into it on a covered patio - rusty! Not real bad - but still. Company told me I need to do "maintenance" - but I don't want to - how fun could that be?

There are products on the market made of recycled material. Very durable. Had mine for 8 years and still look like new. They were expensive but you get what you pay for. I'll have to see if i can find their site.

Angel, are you referring to Loll? I have a few pieces and it is the only brand of outdoor furniture I will buy from now on.

We are on the water in the Caribbean. Tropitone aluminum furniture is over 40 years old and still great. Newer stuff our neighbors have is just as good. Great brand for that environment.

Sonni1 haven't heard of Loll. Mine is mfg by CR Plastics. Similar products, but the designs are a little different. Mine is black and looks like new. Comes in many colors.
