How to match oak & pine stain color

Our stairs have a pine trim (structural and cannot be easily replaced) but the rest of our house is golden oak. How can we match the stains? We tried staining the pine golden oak and it's red.

It require's a skilled and experienced individual to match stain hands on. If one could look at pictures then mix and send matching stain to customers,Sherwin Williams would pay them handsomely for their services. Try and get your hands on a color chart to compare with stairs. Chose 2 additional colors that look like they might mix with the stain you already have. Buy some 1 oz disposable clear plastic medicine cups at drug store. Measure and mix small batches until you get a match. When you think you have a match and stain is dry,apply clear to sample and let it dry before moving forward.

But the real question is will you care in six months. I don't think so. Yes, I can see that the color is redder. However, in the second pic with more shade, I can't see the difference and it isn't huge anyway. A stairway isn't a focal point. Also, do you want to further risk getting stain on those beautiful rug runners?

The doors are unfinished pine doors (I've read that pine is harder to stain - but that's what the contractor offered). We are getting new somerset natural red oak hardwood floors. Pine is easy to stain as long as you remember to use the pre-staining conditioner. It makes it stain more uniformly. The ipswich pine is the best of the stains.

Now you got me started. I was going to comment that the molding and the floors look wonderful and should stay the colors they are. In many older houses with stained ww, the floor is lighter, giving some interest to the room. Then you got me started on base shoe, my FAVORITE topic. IMHO, you must put the base shoe up. It's the finishing touch on fine woodwork. I've always wondered why it is called base shoe and finally determined that it's like putting on your best clothing and then going barefoot. It just looks unfinished. My former house had all natural molding, what I wouldn't give to have it now. I love my house, but the white moldings can go...and the upkeep. My guess is if you're using the original baseshoe and it's held up all these years, it'll will hold up for many more. New stuff, unless you buy oak, not so much. Have fun. The house is beautiful.

yeah, i don't think you can make red oak look like white oak. i have several french antique pieces in european red oak. it is very dark, and i love it. i bought some antique chairs recently to go with a red oak table. i thought they were dark too, but they are in white oak. i believe that i can make the white oak chairs darker, but vise versa is another story. i would definitely make him redo those cabs in the wood that you chose. he should not have changed that without your permission. i hate it when i pay someone for a product/service and they just take it upon themselves to do what they want to do. my poolbuilder moved my pool about a foot and a half without telling me. i noticed it was not lined up with a planter after it was built and he admitted that he had done this. i guess its too late to make him fill that pool in and re-dig another one a foot and a half over. but, i would consider cabinets a different story. make him do it over.

I dont have the answer but i will say that I found a stain to go with it that was close enough to make me happy. obviously will depend on what look youre going for. i mixed one part amber pine to 1/2 part whitewash, to 1/4 part jacobean. Had sherwin williams mix it up to come up with an actual formula once I was happy with it.

The only thing that bothers me in the photos is the quarter round 'shoe mould' in the bottom photo. Looks totally afterthought.

Different woods are supposed to be different colors.

At this point, trying to match the pine stain to the oak is pretty much impossible. Best bet, if the color diff is realllly, reallly bothering you is to pull the carpet on the stairs, paint & reinstall the carpet.
