Sliding shelf for a "converted" bookcase
Comments (3)Some other places to look for ideas, etc.: http://shelvesthatslide.com/sliding_shelves.htm http://www.rockler.com/hardware/drawer-slides conversations about making drawers with the pocket-hole jig: http://kregjig.ning.com/forum/topics/drawer-construction Also--Unless you have a hankering to make a drawer, I think a simpler solution would be to just use a slab of plywood or regular board, if you have one big enough) as a shelf, and simply add some sort of edge all the way around. Maybe you use something 1.5 to 3 inches wide to stand on its edge, thereby making both a covering for the plywood edge AND a lip (use wood glue and panel-board nails; but you might be best off with a good clamp--which would derail me, since I don't have a way to clamp something that large). If you went with this, it might be awkward to use a side-mounted slide, and then you could go w/ an undermount. The undermount would also not be visible when the shelf was not in use, though maybe the side mount wouldn't show that much either....See MoreFamily Room Progress - Rug and Bookcase Options
Comments (27)funky: I just checked my chair and the cushions are not detachable. Squirrel suggested I ask Macys to move the chair on the floor over. You post a lot of good points and some I have been pondering myself and have come up with the same conclusion--limit red on the rug to an accent color. I've pretty much eliminated the first Karastan as the colors/pattern are too similar to the chair. I do like some black accents on the rug as well which is part of what I like about the RugsUSA and black Empress Kirman, though have been looking at overstock.com for other possibilities. Their pics are really not very good, though I've been reading the feedback. Perhaps I'm overthinking this? You know the rug I have there actually works really well, colorwise, I think, and perhaps I should look for something similar in a larger size. It's amazing its a cheap $50 rug made of olefin I picked up last year from MacFruguals as a temporary solution until I could figure out what I wanted to do with the rug. I rotated it and moved the chair to the other corner to get a feel for some of the changes we are considering. I must say that the first Macy's bookcase with the sliding door will really work better if I decide to put a chair here as with a 52" wide bookcase the door clearance needed for the Old World bookcase to open the left door will be partially blocked by the chair. If I move the chair any further to the right then it blocks the view of the TV when sitting at the sectional. I still lean towards the Old World one in terms of styling though and am thinking I could put the books we actually look at on the right side and more decorative items, books we do not look at often on the left. DH doesn't think we really need a chair here anyway, though I think it looks nice. Do you think either one would work? It'll probably come down to when DH and I go to Macys and he can see IRL....See MoreBookcase & Karastan Choice - Empress or Black? (feedback ASAP)
Comments (18)parma: I'm not so sure about a stripe since I already have striped valances and checked sofa cushions, at the same time we don't want anything very formal in this area. Part of what drew me about the kirman rugs is their busy print which I felt would do a good job of hiding any dirt since we all use this room pretty heavily. That also is influencing our delimna what to do and would be interesting to know what others do with kids. Do we buy a lessor quality rug as we have there now and just figure we will replace every 2-5 years and not sweat it if kids drop food or a drink or my 7-year-old decides to work with markers and glue there while my back is turned? Since I have something there right now, my DH does really see the need to change it right now--esp. as we are doing the home office. Maybe in a month or so or if I can find the right rug for less $$--we'll see. DH just wants everything to be done. I still do like that black kirman and perhaps may wait until I can get what I want--better quality, no synthetics, glues which mean less off gassing in the home. Middle DD has eczema/sensitive skin which was part of the reason why I'm keen to replace the rug I have there now--or at least not spend $500 on a rug with the glued backing that will off-gas. So, I'd come to the conclusion Karastan or a hand knotted rug would have less off gassing?...See Morebookcase painting help
Comments (12)I know the furniture arrangement isn't the best, but the bed can't be moved the other way b/c it would block a heating vent. The vent is currently behind that cabinet, which does not block it too much. The bookcase can't go between the doors b/c that would block the corkboard. And that dinosaur on the cabinet is a light. My son uses it as a nightlight, although it's bright enough to read by. Pain in the butt to put together (got it from thinkgeek), but it's cool. We could move the cabinet closer to his bed for a nightstand, but there's always so much crap on it that I'm afraid he would just knock it off with his pillow or bedspread. Unfortunately, this room is just awkward, what with the low windows, the doors, and the vent. The only other place the bed could go is against the center of the planet wall, with space on either side. The problem with that is that my son still falls out of bed once in a while and we figured he'd be safer up against a wall. Plus there is no outlet on that wall. Maybe we will do that at some point though. It would sure make making the bed easier....See MoreRelated Professionals
