Making my first raised bed this weekend. How do I go about it?
Comments (5)My husband just made my first raised bed three days ago using cement bricks we already had. It looks really good and though it was backbreaking work to carry the bricks, husband said it was very easy. Lacking easy access to many of the materials in the sq foot book, we used black silage plastic for the bottom and covered it first with straw seeped in horse manure then a layer of garden grit followed by four bags of compost mixed with grit. The depth is about 12 inches which should let us grow almost anything if it works. My family is very found of American veggies that take up a great deal of space and or grow vertically. So I'm working out ways to get our Three foot by Nine food bed with as many things going up as possible. I'm only 4'8" so the child sized width works perfect for me, but we made the bed longer to conserve bricks. I used old rusted steel beams for the horizontal makers and bamboo stuck under to mark the vertical squares. No link yet as we are just starting - good luck with your bed! Comments (24)Shelley, what a terrific swap box Pam sent you. The theme is so cute. Love your "man" in the apron. I look forward to seeing that beautiful dish show up in your dinner photos. Just so you know Shelley, you aren't the only one that worries about all of those things you mentioned. I think that everyone that participates has the same worries. Comments (34)I can totally relate to what you're going through. I used to look at my bedroom and think there's just something off or missing. I bought, returned and exchanged bedding like nobody's business. It was a running joke in my family. I finally realized it was the way I made my bed. I still love to change my bedding but now I stick with a few core pieces. These items never change: White bedskirt - tailored or ruffled (your personal preferance) White Sheets: - Fitted and flat White Pillow cases: Number of pillows depends on size of bed I've upgraded through the years and now have a white coverlet, shams and bedskirt (I also have my plain white set, just in case). This has really worked out well for my fickle personality. I've included a picture of my bedding and I feel the key to liking your bedroom is how the bed is made. Do you have a white set of sheets? If not, they're quite inexpensive and Wal-mart carries them along with bedskirts. Fold your quilt/comforter at the foot of your bed. Depending on the size of your bed, place 2-3 white pillows first, then shams and and 2 more white pillows and finish it off with one decorative pillow. I have a Cal. King bed which calls for a few more pillows. I hope this helps. I also feel it doesn't matter if your bedding has a cream background (mine does) instead of white as long as your sheets and bedskirt are white it pulls it all together. BTW I liked your red bedding, I think it just needed a little tweaking. I also like what you have now. Good luck and most of all have fun!!...See MoreDecorating help - Rug, art, bedding? Comments (3)Thank you Yayagal. Here's my floor plan. Oh! The pic came out so small! The room is a rectangle with a wall of windows opposite the bed. Dimension are 17" x 14". Outside the wall of windows is a covered deck, so not much natural light. The ceiling is high and not vaulted, but it has angles (1989 built). Here's a pic of the room now (before new furniture/paint/etc.). I was moving things around, taping where I'd want things to go so it's a mess and not normally this crazy looking. The bed will be going in between the window, as it's laid out in the pic above. Sorry, I can't turn the pic around?! Also, big cat tree was moved out :) So embarrassing! New off white wood blinds (like these) have been ordered. I love rich colors, like navy blue, deep burgundy red, gold-green (like a gold-moss color?). My furniture had brushed nickel hardware but I'm going to also had some bronze accents here and there. I don't want it to be matchy-matchy. And my husband has to like it too. Can't be too girly. My only thought was light grey bedding with color accents. I have a few inspiration photos on my home computer I'll post tonight....See Morenatesg
