?? dandruff ....

Help! I am senior citizen (80) & have never ever had dandruff but recently I noticed some scalp itchiness and white flakes when I brush! I started using a dandruff shampoo but the flakes & itchy scalp seem to be worse! This just started a few months ago.

Has anyone had a problem like this ... what could be the cause? Nothing in my health or diet has changed!

Thanks for any ideas/help?!!

Just a couple of suggestions. Are you washing your hair and allowing the shampoo to set on your scalp? Some bottles used to suggest five minutes but that may have changed. Then do a second shampooing but rinsing well immediately after shampooing.

Wash your comb/brush etc. with the shampoo. Rinse and allow to dry in the sun if possible. Unless you are seeing flakes on your scalp some brushes will build up material at the base of the bristles that appear to be dandruff flakes in the air as the material flakes off the brush.

You may need to see a doctor or dermatologist.

Thanks- I sure shall try this ... I had earlier thought about leaving the shampoo on awhile before rinsing it off!! I started using Equate & then Head & Shoulders -both have the same ingredients.

Since this is happening recently I will go to a dermatologist if it continues as it is nothing to explain it all of a sudden happening & never before?!

DO NOT USE THE PASTE WORMERS ON DOGS!!!! There have been several, anecdotal, I grant, references that there is an ingredient in all the paste wormers that is toxic for dogs. One that I read said that even a small amount licked up off the ground (size of a pea) can be harmful. How harmful may depends on the individual dog, but why take chances? The stuff is probably one of the so-called inert ingredients, that make the paste paste-y, but as far as I know, no-one is sure what it is right now. I think if you Google, you should get a couple of references. I have had no trouble giving my dog the Ivomec injectable in her food, but you can also take the needle off the syringe when you draw it out, have the dog sit, open the mouth, pointing up, and squirt it to the back of the mouth, and then give a yummy treat. If your dog is difficult, try if 2 people work, or give it in food, with a tasty gravy maybe?

Ah...whitefly..the bane of hibiscus growers; well that and aphids. It's very common to have this problem in the winter. I use a 10% dish liquid and water solution on my hibiscus once a week. Spray the whole plant, paying attention to the undersides of the leaves. This should keep them at bay. Barb

I've been thinking for some time that this is the residue of one of the wooly aphids, adelgids, wooly whitefly or scale, etc. Whether it's shed skins or the cottony substance they produce, I don't know. If this is the case, then the critters are likely to be close by....in a tree. Perhaps not in your own yard, but somewhere fairly near.

Reading this (although it's several years old) is really interesting because I have a 6 year old cat who reads for all the world like the one in this original post! She's rotund and has difficulty cleaning herself on her back and rear end due to her short, tubby stature. She has a very fine, thick undercoat and a long top coat (almost like wool) She also looks a little deshevilled and the fur across the top of her back is usually oily... and she has dandruff! Although only in that spot on her lower back. The rest of her fur is immaculately groomed and maintained, although thick and woolly. Missy however, fortunately LOVES to be brushed and we also shave her rear end on a fairly regular basis to prevent a build up of nasties as tends to happen with her as she has difficulty cleaning that area. I suppose my biggest concerns for our baby girl are that she is itchy where the dandruff affects her and she also has the tendency to emit a rather pungeant odour as a result of her inability to maintain her nether regions and her naturally oily/flakey skin. She's due for her annual vaccinations so I intend to raise this issue with the vet when we take her along but wondered if anyone else had experienced these problems and what they've found (if anything) works.

You could have scalp psoriasis. Dandruff shampoo will not help. Hopefully, if that's what it is, it's a mild case. Definitely get to the dermatologist they have medication that will offer relief.

Good chance if you are using hair spray that is the problem. I use a full sized bath towel over my shoulders when I lightly spray my hair, if I don't my shoulders will break out, some hair sprays cause flakes, I have a lot of allergies. Didn't use any hair spray for years but now in my 70's need a little to keep it in place! Change hair sprays & see if that helps.

Thank you!Not sure if it is just my hair.. as it seems to be from the scalp itself when I scratch or brush it. Never had it before though & not doing or using anything different when it started. Have an appt. with an endocrinologist next month...
