Lighting Indoor Jade Plant in Winter
Comments (8)Get 6500k if you go T5HO, flowering vs. maintaining does not really apply to succulents unless you go really extreme on the ratio of red to blue light. This is based on scientific study (I can hunt for my source if you don't believe me). There is far too much misinformation on grow lights and plants. I am 'flowering and maintaining' many succulents under my lights. Right now, here is what is budding/blooming for me: 2x Haworthia, 1x Echeveria, 1x Huernia, 1x Faucaria, 1x Aloe, 2x Lithops, 1x Lapidaria, 1x Neohenricia. You might find this thread helpful, I've linked other threads in there with lots of good information as well. http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/3414424/can-i-see-your-winter-setup?n=18 This is my Neohenricia sibbettii, which currently has over 7 flowers. =)...See MoreMealy Bugs on Indoor Jade Plants (Gritty Mix)
Comments (6)I used a super dilute mix, and truly it is hard to avoid the soil entirely no matter what. Others may chime in with their experiences, but mine are such that I didnt have many problems. A couple of my Hoya got some weird spots on leaves, and my aeonium really didnt seem to like it when sprayed on the leaves. Granted, the Aeonium came with a raging infestation I didnt spot until I got home and I ended up tossing the plant eventually. Jade was fine. Really, wouldnt hit the soil unless it was a concern the bugs where in there... the lady at the nursery/garden center I bought the other spray from told me to hit the soil too with the stuff, but I dont know. No insecticide is particularly great for the plant, its all about damage control. Also, when I water I nearly always water until water drains through the pots, which probably helps. My experience is they come in waves, and by the time you have knocked them back a couple times its pretty well over. I do watch like a hawk for these things, probably more so than is necessary... but I hate these things in the ways that people hate differing political opinions. Edit: I like your approach Becky. May have to try that... with loose soil mixes upside down doesnt always work, but makes good sense and I may try that in the future....See MoreOld Jade plant pruning(?) and other Q's about other jade plants
Comments (6)NP, they are showing now. Pretty good looking plants. 1st needs support because it has big branches growing bit 'wildly' (that is not a criticism :), one I can see is too much to the side. Not a problem, you can just prune one off, or prune some of the smaller branches off to make it more balanced. I am only looking at the photo - but think I would prune off the left branch and the lowest big branch. When repotting, I would get original plant into more upright position. Just a suggestion... As jades get bigger, you should decide what shape you want them to grow into. That is personal preference - I like one thick stem/trunk (that's why I said to prune extra branches off). Once you decide, pruning in early spring will help to keep plants balanced and grow the way you like. Variegated jade looks like 'Tricolor' (but I can't see it clearly), and they are as easy to propagate from leaves as green ones. Sometimes they revert to all green, but will grow. They just grow bit slower in my experience. But plant is very small, and you should grow it bigger before taking leaves on - they feed the plant and help it grow. I have many grown from leaves and also from stem cuttings. The colorful plant is probably sedum and could be propagated very easily from leaves or stem cuttings....See MoreIndoor banana plant flowering?!
Comments (3)Thanks for responding Matt. Should I do anything about the part that is bunched up? I can’t tell if the center leaf is managing to continue up to the top via the bunched up bit. If it’s stuck, then I’d guess I should cut the bunched up part so the plant can continue growth, but as it will be out the side, do you think the top haf of the plant would die? Thanks....See Moremarguerite_gw Zone 9a
