Need help with my "back yard makeover"
Comments (3)I think you could easily get a table with 2 chairs back there, or two lounge/Adirondack chairs with a fire bowl. Ikea has some very inexpensive patio options. I agree with handmethathammer that some planters with brightly colored flowers and maybe some herbs if you're a cook would have a huge impact. Get a couple of fairly sizable planters of different heights. Estate sales and thrift stores often have good prices on these. If you get big ones you can put styrofoam in the bottom below the likely root depth to keep the weight and the cost of soil down. Make sure you get plants of varying height (google "thriller, filler, spiller" for an easy rule of thumb) and your local garden store can point you to some plants that do well in your climate. I don't mind the color of the fence--it doesn't look particularly red in the picture. I think it would look great with some wall planters on it with, again, some brightly colored annuals....See MoreI need help with my back yard/garden puddles of water and mud
Comments (10)Those actually look like snap-togther decking tiles (seen here). These are not intended to be set on grade (or bare soil) but rather as a permeable covering for an older deck or patio surface. LIke any wood product they will rot, collect moisture and discolor when in direct contact with the ground. I'd agree with Yard about removing them and then using a more durable surface - it could be concrete as suggested but could just as well be gravel or manufactured pavers, properly set on a prepared level surface....See Morehelp needed - how to decorate my front and back yard?
Comments (17)Landscaping is not designed in complete disregard of whatever is the backdrop. The first picture is not the one someone would use in order to landscape the front of this house. You'd need to turn the camera around so that it is aiming toward the house. Because of the wall you'd need to stand at the gate and show the area in slightly overlapping photos, panning from left to right such that everything is included except what is near your feet, showing as much of the house as possible. You'd also want to take another picture by backing up and standing in the street that shows your whole property in a single shot. For the back yard, you'd need to do basically the same. From about midway out into the yard, turn around and show the back of house from lot line to line. If you can't capture it in a single picture, show it in two slightly overlapping pictures. If that back yard has shade on it from noon on, at what portion of the yard is the shade located? And where is it coming from?...See MoreI need help with picking plants for my backyard project
Comments (5)If you don't want anything to grow taller than 10', you are looking at shrubs, not trees. And there are a fair number of shrubs that will easily exceed 10' as well, so you might need to prepare yourself for some pruning down the road :-) CA has an amazing array of native plants that could work, including a bunch of appealing flowering shrubs - ceanothus, manzanitas, flannelbush, Carpenteria, salvias, etc. A visit to a good local independent nursery would expand your choices significantly. The planting bed depth will need to be sufficient to accommodate the full mature spread of the plants being used plus some wiggle room. If the shrub grows to be 8' wide, than you need at least 8' plus.....so 9-10'...See Moregm_tx
