How do I begin designing a tiled shower for a guest bath?--)
Comments (2)If you have a Tile Shop store in your area, they have several vignettes in them that are great for inspiration and tile websites usually have photo galleries available. I also did a Google search for images of tiled bathrooms, thumbed thru the bathroom books available at Lowe's and did searches here in the forum using words like "finished", "new bathroom" or "done". Houzz.com is also a great source for inspiration, however in our situation, I found the designs to be unrealistic for our budget. Also, the gallery side of the forum has a lot of examples too....See MoreOk, where do I begin? Need new flooring.
Comments (4)Indecision seems very common with selection of flooring, I'm having the same problem but with looking and talking to people here, have finally zeroed in on only about three possibilities. The size of your house SORT OF tells you how wide the boards should be, though I think these days there are no set rules. We finally got a couple boxes of (returnable) wood, in a couple different widths, and just laid it out in the rooms. That helped a lot as to determining what width would look best in our particular rooms. If you have pets and kids you will want to get a durable wood like oak. I've found here that there is a scale that tells hardness called Janka rating, which I have not paid much attention, but for you it will be helpful. Since you want it lighter, that also narrows it down. So, see, you are further along than you realized! Now all you have to do is go look at it and decide what you think is pretty. You might take a cupboard door along. I think you are on the right track getting a light floor to contrast with the darker cabinets. One good rule in all of this selection process is to look at it, lay it down, hold it up to the other materials you will have in the room, and if it doesn't say "yes" then the answer is "no"....See MoreI'm FINALLY ready to paint my kitchen - but where do I begin?
Comments (4)I like the more modern look too. I actually like both tile choices you are thinking about. It might be better if you decide what you want to do with the cabinets first though before you decide on backsplash. I think if you changed the doors and painted it would look good with the island. I would look nice if you had the island painted a different color. That would make it a little bit different but tie it in to the modern look you are going for!...See MoreI want to install all porcelain tiles inside my home, where do i start
Comments (5)I would get myself over to Yelp, and research local flooring stores that sell product AND do installation. Read through all the reviews. Get a comfort level that you can work with the folks in the store, and that they stand behind their products and work. Even more important when you're doing the whole house--it's a big project! When things go wrong, and you can read through many, many threads about that, the manufacturer points at the installation, and the installer points at the manufacturer. It is an uphill battle, it can get $$$legal$$$, and when I put flooring in our whole downstairs, I was (rarely for me) less concerned about saving $1/sf than I was concerned about not having anything go wrong, and in the event something did go wrong, having a long-standing store with LEVERAGE over the manufacturer to reduce my risk. I'm glad I went the way I did, and after all my questions, I went with the decades-old family-run store with the great reputation across town. They made great recommendations, and made sure to offer me all my options/upgrades up front, and didn't try to talk me out of anything that was important to me: (e.g. I asked for no quarter round to have a sleeker look of baseboard meeting flooring). Be sure to ask about additional costs for moving furniture, and which crew they will send. In my case, they sent their "best" crew (most experienced), and I agreed to wait for them. They picture-framed our hearth (mitered corners-looks great), and "beefed-up" a stair step that leads to our front door, making it wider/safer--at no extra charge. There are things that a homeowner might not know about (cheap glue?), moisture issues if you're on a slab, etc. These are just my thoughts and experience. You can also read through a lot of threads in this flooring forum to see what goes wrong for folks, and get a better idea of what questions to ask. Good luck!...See MoreMissy Wright
