Finishing Basement Laundry

We currently have a basement laundry room that is shared space with storage, furnace, hot water tank, ejector pit, etc. we are going to start a kitchen remodel soon and I am thinking about seeing if they can drywall part of the space for a true laundry room. Nothing fancy, we could put some of the old kitchen cabinets down there and just have a nicer space. Inexpensive flooring, ceiling can stay unfinished for now. I am thinking that given it is currently concrete block and needs to be framed and dry walled, then the plumbing and electrical would have to be reworked through the drywall, it may be a bigger project than I am giving it credit for. Any idea what cost range this would be in? It would be about a 10x6 area. I thought we might save some $ because the plumber, electrician and drywallers will all be here for the kitchen and maybe this wouldn’t be a huge amount of extra work. Am I way off base?

You will certainly save money having it done at the same time however, your overall project costs will increase. I’d suggest you have your contractor quote it both ways and then you can determine if the incremental costs are worth it to you. Personally, I think a finished laundry room makes the chore of laundry so much more pleasant and efficient. You mention reusing cabinets, etc. You might want to also save some of your countertop to create a folding area. While it’s probably a stretch to say it would add much to your resale value, I think a finished laundry room will make your house more appealing to potential buyers so.

Moving the laundry to the basement wouldn't lower the value of the house. Like you said every inch of space is a premium so don't waste it on washer/dryer on the main floor of the house when there is plenty of room in the basement. Lots of basements house the laundry in America so I would move them down there.

Running the fan continuously could cause a negative air pressure situation in the basement. In intake air has to come from either the windows in the basement or door leading the the first floor. Does the furnace have it's one outside air intake? If not then having the fan run continously is probably not a good idea. Bathroomfanexperts.com has a large array of electronic timers. There is one which can be progammed to go on and off on a 7 day cycle. Perhaps something like that would allow the fan to exhaust the air periodically. I would think the smallest (50CFM?) bathroom fan would be sufficient.

Get a plumber out there, May have to break some concrete and put a couple fittings on, Sink drains are 2", so he will go from the existing 3" to a 2" and up your wall, If you still need the floor drain for whatever reason it may have to move as well.
