Suggestions for kid's room black out curtains & rod w/ narrow studs?
Hey everyone-
I have never purchased curtains before so am a bit overwhelmed but would like to have black-out curtains for my kid's rooms.
The issue I have is that the studs are ~6" and ~23" away from the window frame (see picture). I am worried about kids pulling down the curtains/rods so wanted to install brackets into the studs. 6" does not feel wide enough for a normal type rod for the stack back so wondering but 23" seems too wide.
Would zip / traverse rod with brackets holding from the top and than having a rod wider than the brackets would work?

Also, any suggestions on types of curtain header to maximize black out effect? (i.e. pleated, etc.)

Comments (17)I've tried all the options, well almost, for both my kids' rooms and my husband's office where he needs it dark for reading images on the computer screen, and room darkening drapes are by far the best. I have purchased both inexpensive room darkening drapes at Target and the roc-Lon blackout liners. The dark colored curtains (navy or chocolate brown) from Target (or Penney's) work the best and I mounted them a good six inches beyon the trim to keep light out from the side. The lighter colors don't work as well. The roc-Lon blackout liners work great too. I originally purchased them to attach to the existing curtains in my kids' rooms but they were too heavy and cumbersome. So I ended up purchasing a double rod and hanging the blackout liner on the inside rod and their curtains on the outside rod. I've used blackout roller shades but light comes in on the sides. When I had those I either used Velcro to get them to stick to the window (not attractive) or hung thick shades that hung to cover the side gap....See MoreLong, narrow living/dining w/corner fireplace....

Comments (6)Rods telescope so you can put multiple rods together. The issue is the support. In 15 ft you'll need supports at each end and three supports in the middle. Comments (76)That brown leather is light and attractive. One thing about a brown leather sofa or chair is that it always looks "right" and natural, like a found treasure. I mean, you expect a leather seat to be brown. It's not your choice. it's timeless. So it's a great neutral and it will go with other thngs quite well -- including ocean blue, as you can see in your other mood board. About the only limitation I've ever had with leather seating is that they don't take throw pillows easily (slippery) but throws warm them up....See Morenewconstructionoptions

6 years agoI have solar shades on the windows now and want to add an additional layer on top; currently we have just hung sheets/blankets over the solar shades for some additional darkness.
The room also has another small window (see new pic). So trying to figure out if we should do a small roman shade for the small window +:
a. center open curtain (but have to deal with weird symmetry of the rod or the stack back covering part of window)
b. left open curtain (so stack back goes left)
c. some other type of treatment (i.e. roman shade, etc.)
d. do another type of roller shade on top?

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoIf you look at your header (the horizontal piece of wood above your window, in between each stud are blocks of wood. If you were to screw into those blocks with longer screws, you wouldn't have to worry about getting into the studs. Back tabs are curtains with tabs on the back for the rod to go through. They look like this when hung.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoUsually in children's bedrooms, especially nurseries, we recommend room darkening because of nap time and bed times before the sun completely sets.
It doesn't look the the solar shades you currently have are giving you much room darkening at all, even with the temporary sheet.
I would not recommend adding another shade over the existing shades. I would remove the current shades and replace them with a room darkening shade. You can get Roman shades with room darkening linings.

You can also get solar shades that have two shades on one. One of the shades would be see-through and the other would be room darkening. This option is also available
in Roman shades and woven shades depending upon the brand.
