CONTAINER SOILS - WATER MOVEMENT and RETENTION XXII
Comments (1044)Over the years, I've saved a ton of word documents that answer common questions. One of those documents is about particle size: Particle Sizes (ideal) In a perfect world, the mineral fraction for use in the gritty mix would range in size from 1/10 - 5/32" (.100 - .156", or 2.5 - 4.0mm). The bark fraction would be slightly larger to allow for some breakdown over the life of the planting ........ from 1/8 - 1/4 is about ideal (.125 - .250" or 3.25 - 6.25mm). For the 5:1:1 mix, particle size should be from dust to 3/8". (0 - .375", or 0 - 4mm), with most of the bark ranging in size from 3/16 - 3/8" ( .188 - .375", or 4.8 - 9.5mm). The perlite should be on the coarse side - something like the all purpose or super coarse shown below. If you read the size gradation next to the images, you'll see the images are misleading as the product appears to be much larger than the size listed in print. starter: 1/16 - 3/32 inch (1.6 - 2.4mm) you can sub #1 cherrystone/quartzite if available grower: 3/32 - 3/16 inch (2.4 - 4.8mm) you can sub #2 cherrystone/quartzite if available developer: 3/16 - 5/16 (4.8 - 8.0mm) you can sub #3 cherrystone/quartzite if available turkey: 5/16 - 7/16 inch (8.0 - 11.0mm) turkey finisher: 7/16 - 5/8 inch (11.0 - 16mm) The last 2 sizes of grit can be used as ballast in the bottom of shallow pots by mixing 3 parts of grit to 1 part of your soil; this, to avoid water perching above the layer. The layer should be as tall/deep as the PWT your soil supports. Skip this if using a properly made gritty mix. Al...See MoreTomatoville down?
Comments (111)I registered to join roughly 3 times over the past couple years and my account was never activated. if they couldn't maintain a website, not even something simple by approving new-users, what makes them think people are interested in a subscription based site? sounds like another disaster.. if they were having financial trouble keeping the site running, then they should of just had a donation page where their small group of approved forum users could submit a contribution. they could of also passed down the some of the responsibility to approve new users to someone else, including help maintaining the site. surely they could of picked a few regulars to maintain that and i'm sure some wouldn't mind. it's unfortunate as the site has potential to grow. And again, could of likely been self-sustained with donations. as a former web dev/admin, i can think of a bunch of things. perhaps donators could receive special perks and forum features, etc. there is a lot that can be done. it's also much easier to have a site financially maintain itself when you have a growing website of new members, rather than turning them away by not allowing them to participate.....See MoreOT: Where’s Virginia and Carol, and how are you Bart?
Comments (34)Just a quick hello from me - to let you all know my heart goes out to all of you going through tough times; it's so good to hear from you all, and I wish I could somehow get the words out to give needed comfort and hope to everyone individually, but somehow they're failing me, and have been for some time. I too miss Virginia amongst others, she was so kind to me and to so many others when in difficulties. I've been having a s**t time since November when I rashly thought I'd have a little outing into the city one evening... and relapsed (several rather traumatic events happened during and after that evening, all in quick succession, so I think that's what caused the relapse; I might have got through one or two of these challenges but not all of them, one on top of the other. As Ingrid said, any stress can exacerbate these weird auto-immune/neurological/inflammation type of illnesses like crazy.) So then I didn't have the mental or physical energy to follow the forum at all for a while, then could only manage to read but not respond/write anything; then managed to write a bit every now and then, so long as it wasn't too complex for my challenged brain (which means anything involving multitasking, like feeling and thinking/forming words at the same time (!) ...I know, it's weird!... But, as I'm getting better at using the mindfulness to dissolve the stress, and with time and rest am definitely improving now; I actually got out of my gloomy house for a little walk the other day and saw the sparkling blue sea again! So beautiful... and have even done a bit of tidying up in the garden! Whooa! 35 minutes max per session including lots of sitting, and/or lying down to rest every time I'm on the point of fainting, heart pounding, until the blood gets back to the brain and I can see and think and stand up straight again. Just pulling off dead leaves and stems from the row of agapanthus on the raised bed and tearing them up and scattering the debris for mulch. That's all I've got growing out there I'm afraid, apart from some dying, drought-struck/borer attacked natives on the verge. And lots of overgrown rye grasses around the dead lawn! But it feels great to do something out there, no matter how minor. :-)...See MoreHOUZZ is so screwed up . . .
Comments (115)Yep, I totally agree with you as to how screwd up Houzz is. As we go to their website to order an outside table, 3 times we made an order and we're told about thd ETA of our order, but as it get closer to the delivery date, that's when they'll email us telling us that the table is Out of Stock???? How crazy is that? And not just once but 3 times? Seems like Houzz have a lousy communication with their sellers. The right hand have no idea what the left hand is doing. So, I took the pleasure to Uninstall Houzz totally. Goobye Houzz. We don't have to deal with you anymore....See Morekazmom
