Phal & Mini Oncidium questions
Comments (6)Hi, lynx. As arthur said, your tiny oncid is really a *Tolumnia*. They used to be called "equitant oncidium", and you can google culture notes for it with either name. They definitely do not want phal conditions-- they need higher light than phals, and roots need to dry quickly. They are often grown in pure charcoal bits in a tiny clay pot or on mounts. I don't think your "once a week watering" will do the trick. I've grown several of the Equitant/Tolumnia. As you found, they are charming little things, set spikes in the fall, and bloom for a very long time. Here's another url for culture notes Here is a link that might be useful: culture of tolumnia/equitants...See MoreDifference between 'mini-phals' and 'multi-floral phals?'
Comments (2)My understanding of mini-Phals is that they bloom on small plants and stay small, even at maturity. Growers' definitions of small can vary, but we're not talking a 9" long leaf here. Multiflora Phals have smaller flowers than "standard size" Phals but more of them on somewhat smaller plants. When mature, they're more likely to branch and have more than one spike at a time. So - 2 different categories. Mini-Phals usually stay smaller than multifloras, according to numerous growers' definitions. If you're thinking of ordering from a grower, I suggest you ask them the leaf span of the plant in 4-5 years - whatever your time period. I learned the hard way that some growers list the leaf span at the present time, rather than at maturity....See MoreMini scented Phal
Comments (2)The mottling on the leaves gives it away. If I recall my phal species correctly, phalaenopsis schilleriana has mottled leaves and some varieties are definitely fragrant. Based on the very limited evidence you might have a hybrid with schilly as a parent. Of course with no bloom photos you'll meet know. Even with photos te chance of a true ID is slim....See MoreMossy growth in mini-Phal bark/sphagnum media
Comments (11)Thanks, jane and Al. Oddly, this is one of my least watered orchids (realizing that doesn't mean it's not overwatered) -- pretty much 'pour-through' maybe once every couple of weeks, lightly misted every 2-3 days, but very thoroughly soaked prior to out-of-town vacations 4x annually. It sits in a mixed bark/sphagnum/perlite medium, and the plastic container has air holes poked in the sides and bottom -- lots of air flow and drainage, I think. I do think this is a good time to carefully pull the fern out before it overtakes. Perhaps a very low bar to set, but I'm a novice: if the leaves and roots look fairly healthy, and the plant flowers, I feel I'm doing something right. :) It's recommended to freshen up the sphagnum moss about every year anyway -- something I'll really need to work on....See Morejudyj
