Low-e vs solar gain vs window treatments
Comments (22)Hi ZIns, Oberon offered professional technical details so I will chime in with homeowner experience. Yes, even with Low-E, there will be fading. Depending on the amount and intensity of exposure and the finish, it is a matter of how much and how soon. In a situation where the sun is very mild and light, by the time fading is noticeable, it may also be time to refinish the floor. My guess is the floor is not receiving year-round exposure, true? The sun is stronger and deeper during some time of the year and weaker and less intense at other times, is that so? We have seasonal sun intensity problem too and solve it with a combination of solution. We use rugs to protect several sections of our floor during mid-Spring through late Summer. The rugs are removed to prevent tripping when we have visitors. The rugs are also removed around Autumn when the sun is low and the exposure is much less intense and shortening each day. We have old furniture in one area by our French doors and my wife made knitted coverings to cover the furniture. As necessary, we remove the covering when appropriate. Outside the French doors, we installed retractable awning so that during extremely hot summer days, the awning extends to provide cover without blocking natural light. Our goal is to not use any window treatment because we enjoy natural light and the views. Hope this helps a bit....See MoreLow-E2 vs Low-E3
Comments (7)You don't need LoE3 in Toronto. LoE2 suffices. As to triple pane, this forum is very pro-triple-pane, but I am in the Chicago area and resisted the urging for triple pane from my windows guy and opted for double pane on my Marvin Ultimates. I chose double over triple because of the cost, and also didn't want the windows (casements and sliding patio doors) to be so heavy. I have been very happy with the double pane Marvin Ultimates. Even when the temps are low single digits, I am not getting condensation or any other problems. Having said that, I am careful about setting the humidifier in my house in the winter in order to avoid condensation. Also, my installer was great. It's all about the installation. You could have the best triple pane window ever made, and if its not installed properly, you'll have problems....See MoreShould these bids be the same? Andersen E-Series and Marvin Ultimate
Comments (27)We actually ended up ordering Marvin "Contemporary" Casements. These were a slimmer profile that we just liked the look of more. I don't think they offer these anymore, but they would be similar to the new Marvin "Modern" line. We have generally been happy with them. We had them painted black (interior) and these offered the slimmest profile. The others would have ended up looking quite chunky on the inside when fully painted black. If you are painting black, I would pay up for the Marvin Modern, if you don't need that slim profile look on the inside, then the E-Series or Ultimate would be a great option and I don't think you can really go wrong with either....See MoreMarvin wood/ultrex vs. Alside Mezzo. Comments (5)#1 hire a window pro that only does windows do your window install and let a sider do the siding. Forget the notion of wanting “ one company to do it all”. #2 mezzo is not regarded as a solid window., in fact no alside window is. Another brand “ jack of all trades” contractors seem to use are MI Windows which are horrible. Just as bad as pella vinyl. There are high end vinyl windows that are more energy efficient than any well knon wood window brands. Look into Okna, soft lite, kensington, or sunrise. These are top performers and good looking as well. where are you located? Some brands are regional....See MoreRelated Professionals
