Humbly Seeking Kitchen Layout Input on New Build...
Comments (16)livewire - Thank you SO VERY much for the plan! I loved it but my hubby instantly saw issues with the oven/micro combo right by the doorway to the hallway and the formal dining room. Hubby couldn't visualize the island for some reason. The guy who jokes at me about my vision skills cannot see what you meant. I think I know exactly what you meant, and the island would be LOVELY! Misiwa - thinking it over about moving the micro/oven combo. LisaA - I like your design, but unfortunately we are planning to go with a counter depth refrigerator. Do you think it could be pulled off with a counter depth fridge instead of a fully integrated? I haven't ordered our fridge yet, so you have given me something to think about! BP - You sound like my mom, lol! So worried about dishes and utensils. I appreciate the concern, it makes me think about something like Lisa's design with the main sink not in the island.... Jdez - Thanks for the vote of confidence. By "like it is" do you mean the original kitchen or something that has morphed since that point? Sena01- I personally really liked your idea. My husband just thinks I would miss my cabinetry on that side. Thinking it over... Okay, I hope I did not leave anyone out! I want to thank each and every one of you for your input and especially those of you that took the time to draw my kitchen out or design it on a computer program! I apologize for not being on here sooner. My tooth is killing me, and my daughter started back to school today. Had an emergency call from my builder and had to drop everything and meet him earlier today. Safe to say, it has just been a Monday! You guys really are so helpful. I am open to more ideas or critiques......See MoreJust got our kitchen design back for home build.. Input on "extras"?
Comments (19)1) Move the dishwasher to the right of the sink. The counter between the sink and the cooktop is the best prep area in the kitchen. If the dishwasher is to the left of the sink (as pictures), it's in the middle of your prep area. This means no one (including the cook) can open the dishwasher while someone is cooking without being massively in the cook's way. If you move the dishwasher to the right, you could could an entire meal with the dishwasher open, and it would never be in your way. 2) Swap all the base cabinets for drawers except the sink cabinet. You might also want to leave one slim base cabinet for cook sheets/casserole dishes, but that isn't necessary if you are going to put those items above the fridge or double ovens. 3) Swap the locations of the fridge and the double ovens. You want counter next to your ovens so you can put something hot down quickly and with little chance of bumping into others. Ideally, you want counter near the fridge too, but carrying something hot across the room can burn you or other. Carrying some stuff from the fridge across the room, while a bit annoying, is not a safety hazard. The fridge is also more often used than the ovens are. The fridge where it is currently will block the doorway every time it is open, which will be often. If you move it to where the double ovens are, you no long have the fridge road block. Also, the typical action flow of a kitchen is: fridge (get the food) --> big prep counter with adjacent sink (wash the food and mix/chop/peel it) --> either the cooktop or the oven (cook the food) If you swap the fridge and ovens as I have suggested, that puts your appliances in the same order as the actions in the kitchen. Namely, fridge --> sink and big counter between the sink and cooktop --> cooktop or ovens. This creates a good and efficient work floor. 4) If you move the double ovens as I suggest, make sure no one entering that doorway is likely to run into an open oven. Ovens are open less often than fridges, but it's a lot worse to walk into an open oven, so you don't want to risk that. I am hoping that doorway is to a pantry so this isn't an issue. 5) Is this kitchen going to have three ovens? Or is the range in the picture meant to be a cooktop? If it is the latter, then you want drawers under the cooktop too. 6) I wouldn't go for 36" + 10" stacked cabinets. I don't think you'll ever use the 10" tops of those cabinets, so really you are paying more for 36" of useful storage space when you could pay less for 42". I agree it'd be better for cabinets to go to the ceiling, so I'd ask how much for molding or whatever would extend the 42" cabinets to the top....See MoreNew old house - would love input on kitchen design!
Comments (26)Mama goose - I really like that one from the links you sent. I also found this doing some more browsing online. The window is larger is gives me some more perspective. http://hookedonhouses.net/2013/03/13/kays-kitchen-inspired-by-somethings-gotta-give/ I'm open to ideas for the back entry and laundry area. I planned for stackables. Right now I just have a washing machine. The previous owner put up clothes lines in the attic and there's no vent. I hang a lot (not in the attic) but am missing a dryer. Until I do the remodel, I'm lucky my neighbor is a very good friend. Accessing the half bath isn't a huge issue. The other door you see goes to my office/den which connects to my bedroom (bungalow layout :)). So, I'm the primary user, and guests will likely use the other one....See MoreNew home kitchen design, seeking input!
Comments (11)My wife normally does most of the cooking for our family but has friends who also enjoy cooking and will help out when over, so up to 3 people working in the kitchen at a time. Breakfast and lunch will likely be at island (we figured we could seat up to four there (three at outside edge and one just around the corner across from the entry to the pantry) dinner will be at the dining table which is just out of shot in the drawing but part of an open concept layout. In terms of types of cooking... a bit of everything really, stirfries, braises, roasts. She only bakes occasionally but has been known to make macarons, meringues, and other types of treats for teachers gifts/ parties, etc. (hence the preference for electric oven). We would go with a dual fuel range but that isn't a possibility with the BlueStar. We usually don't entertain large groups probably up to 12 at a time. We have a desk drawn in but during our site visit today we realized it's sort of puny and the kids will likely prefer to pull up to the island for homework rather than staring at the wall so we thought we would turn that area into a concealed storage for phone, mail, stationery, etc. In terms of the refrigeration, we figured a 36" fridge and 30" freezer would be adequate based on what we are currently using.... although feedback is helpful here as kids are still small. We do have a secondary fridge & deep freeze currently which could reside in the garage but we've also considered ditching those for a secondary fridge in the pantry just to keep the groceries central to the kitchen. My wife is the only coffee drinker in the house and we currently have a very compact Nespresso machine which serves the purpose, I don't think we need a dedicated breakfast bar/ coffee bar area. In terms of the range hood, there is a second floor but we've allocated space for the ventilation to pass through (behind a closet) to the roof with hopes of mounting the fan remotely to reduce noise. Thank you for the thorough questions!...See MoreRelated Professionals
