Comments (17)Calvin / wetfeet I totally agree about the differences in picture use between an eBay vendor and an academic lecture. I was merely pointing to the similarities in that some people do not put credit where it is due. It has been the subject among various coffee-pot conversations around here for a few weeks on and off. I just think it is a good idea to talk about it since right-clicking and saving is soooo easy - and everyone does it. In regads to orchids, particulrly mericlones, we expect the flower to be exactly like the one in the photo...If you haven't flowered your stock and are using somone else's pictures, then you may be misleading, intentionally or not. Calvin: don't you find science and bench research analogous to orchid culture? As far as "change one variable at a time to see if blooming can be initiated"? My boss wants to put me in charge of cell culture since my "green thumb" might be useful in getting some stuborn cells to thrive. I think it is so funny that people with a mind for science also grow houseplants and, in my case, have a reef aquarium. Several physicians and scientists here want me to start a orchid-club at the medical center..the only problem is while we are playing with our plants - who will take care of patients and perform research?...See Moremiss huff lantana from cuttings
Comments (32)Hey Claire and Jeff...I think I might just become a Lantidiot myself. We were getting rid of some annual lantana a week ago. I popped them out of the pots and into our big compost barrels to be thrown into our huge compost pile. Three days later they had not been emptied yet to the big pile. There were sitting in a big black barrel in scorching 90 degree weather with no water and they looked exactly the same as when I had unpotted them. I loudly announced to everyone there that I was going to pull everything up in my yard and plant lantana. Well of course I won't do that but it was amazing how wonderful they still looked. Comments (45)Herbalicious - I love the Elvis thingy! Would love to see it - Elvis get's blamed for All kinds of things in my family just like "Not ME" from Family Circle. I have 3 garden 'objects' in my yard. One is a frog that my Mom made me - (love him & is extra special since she is no longer with us) and I have a small turtle that has a 'bobbin' head (VERY cute, I just couldn't resist )but I haven't decided where he will go as I just got him. The 3rd is an old iron wagon/tractor wheel raised up in a sqare shaped mini flower garden. I have placed a 3' rooster weather vain in the center of the wheel. The first year I planted r/w/b flowers in memory of my father but now it is a 'catch all' for left overs from the annual flower beds. My daughter cares for it and plants them where ever she wishes and it looks all willy-nilly but is very pretty. I am not a uniform type person -I just plant what catches my eye every spring. I do have an old cast iron bath tub and an old wash machine tub that in hid on the north side of my house for mint. That stuff takes over, if not contained!! They belong to my husband, I guess it is a 'guy' thing??? I plan to put a pond & fountain in my back yard next year but no plastic wild life,(we have wild turkeys, deer, pheasant, grouse, geese and a multitude of other critters) just live fish and vining plants will be added....See MoreLost (or stolen) and Found
Comments (79)Good question HH :). As to jewels....I found a pretty little pearl broach (antique) in a townhouse we purchased a few years ago. I still have it...they were drug dealers who were thrown out by the PO and they and the other six people who roomed in the place trashed an already trashed place. It took a six person cleaning crew a week to clean it up including all of the broken glass (because why not break the windows before you go right?). I don't care if it was the druggies grandmothers broach...karma left it in the place and I wasn't hunting down drug dealers. So that's a good and bad story. My other townhouse is more fun. We purchased within a few hours of listing despite the place being overpriced because I wrote the contract at asking price or bank approved appraised value, which ever was the lesser knowing that it would appraise about fifty grand lower than our offer. That man thought he was so smart lol he had his brother do the appraisal :). But it was not a huge town...people knew of the relationship so the bank rejected the appraisal and did another, coming in exactly where I said it would. He tried to get out if the contract so we sued for breach...ugly ugly but we won of course. So out if bitterness I guess he removed the horrific chandelier from the dining room which he said his wife carried on her lap on the plane from a castle in Hungary. I don't know why she bothered because you can buy them all day long at lows for about 22 bucks but whatever....it saved the price of removing it from our costs lol. They also left the new fridge and washer and dryer (not addressed in the contract either way). They didn't have time to take them because we had forced closing before they started packing the day prior to moving (they thought that we would give up). They came back two months later saying their kids wanted them for their new house so they would go ahead and take them now. I laughed and suggested they try a better storage facility and closed the door. Those appliances didn't come close to our legal fees and weren't going anywhere. Then there is this house....we purchased lock, stock and barrel. Not only did they bake a quiche and leave it in the fridge with juice, coffee and creamer but they left a dozen roses in a silver vase that belonged to the original owner on the dining room table with two glasses, a cheese plate and a bottle of wine. They also left a toy on the table for our son and a few others were hidden around the house for him. The house was spotless with freshly made beds and fully stocked bathrooms. If I ever buy a house again I'm going to pay someone to do that for me again lol. It was heaven!!!!...See MoreLars
