Cream distressed cabinets or knotty alder?
Comments (7)The combination looks lovely - thats a great way to get what you want without making the whole room seem too dark. I picked painted cabinets for my own kitchen because Im not planning on renovating EVER again and I wanted the most timeless option. Wood grains go in and out of fashion but painted cabinets seem to be pretty consistently in the scheme. Of course you can always paint the wood cabinets down the road but I would have a harder time doing that than repainting....See MoreKnotty Alder Cabinets... Is this 'Blotchy'?
Comments (3)End grain staining darkening is a seperate problem from blotching. End grain always absorbs stains differently than long grain. Some woods are wore than others (large pores in the wood) and should be treated to prevent excessive darkening before staining. Blotching is caused by the wood fiber not being parallel to the cut surface. This to alters how the wood absorbs stain, tending to create darker areas in the midst of what appears as figured flat grain. It is harder to mitigate, but it can still be minimized by using a coat of about 1 pound cut shellac on the surface before staining. The shellac is absorbed and helps fill the pores that then cannot absorb the stain as easily. A light sanding removes the shellac that is on the surface allowing the stain to penetrate those areas as desired....See MoreNew alder cabinets installed - Is this normal for alder?
Comments (43)Mayflowers - I dont know about the stain or the finish. So here is an update. I discovered from our designer that these are not custom made cabinets. They were made by Mid Continent Cabinets. Apparently this factory is not able to, or doesnt want to, pick out less knotty pieces of alder to remake the doors. We could ask them to remake x doors and drawers and we might get x drawers and doors that are worse, or better, or the same. This seems like very odd quality control to me, and a huge waste of everyone's time. Our designer spoke with someone at Mid Continent who said that alder is a poor man's cherry, and that we should be able to replace all the doors with cherry. She left us a sample and indeed it looks like it might work, But Mid Continent quoted us $2600 to remake all drawers and doors in cherry. Our designer said she would pay half "because she and I are both guilty of miscommunication during the initial cabinet design", even though I gave her the exact bill of materials that we had chosen a year ago with another company. As well as shown her pictures of the cabinets. Whatever. So my question to you guys - Ive heard that cherry darkens with time. Would you take the chance getting cherry drawers and doors on an alder frame? The colors match very well right now. Personally, I kind of want our designer to reimburse us some $$$ and use it to get custom doors and drawers from a builder who actually cares about quality and can hand pick the alder. And then she can wash her hands of this mess and we can take responsibility of the final product rather then being at the mercy of unhelpful companies like Mid Continent....See Morelight white oak floor, dark knotty alder trim okay together?
Comments (3)Without a picture - if you are mixing types of wood you might want white trim with wood stained doors and cabinets. White trim can make those transitions between wood types easier and brightens the space a bit....See MorePatty
