Windows Home Decorating Design Dilemma

Seeking help re: window treatments of all shapes and sizes

We've been in our first home - a late 50's rambler that had been flipped - for a while now, and we've finally hit the point where the window treatments are the biggest unfilled gap... But we're absolutely stumped on how to proceed since, on top of being first-time homeowners, all of the windows seem to be of vastly different sizes that aren't exactly standard issue today.

We're obviously looking to add some privacy and style to the house, but, being located in a suburb of Seattle, we'd also love to maximize the amount of light we can get and further insulate the house to minimize the need for heating/cooling.

Measurements listed below are in inches, and written as "width x height"
All window trim 2.5 on side, 3.5 on top/bottom
Front corner window (pic 1): 106x68, 34x68
Kitchen window (pic 2): 74x38
Dining window (pic 3): 70x52
All upper-level bedroom windows (pic 4): 96x33
For bonus points, we have a room downstairs (office/spare) that doesn't get a ton of light + usage with a 59x46 window.

Hang shades and/or curtains at the ceiling or from the ceiling.

Or equalize all the curtains/window treatments at the same height (of highest window(s) in group).

But, I think, overall, hanging at the ceiling or from the ceiling, would be good for your space - would give the rooms more height.

It is the preferred way to hang drapes, etc. - in many design setups, and in your case it could be helpful for evening out the window discrepancies, also.

Congratulations on your first home!!!!! If your priority is privacy and insulating, I would recommend a light filtering , top/down bottom up cellular shade for all windows except the kitchen sink one. Cellular shades can come in large sizes and they have the least amount of stack when they are completely opened. For the kitchen window, I would recommend something pretty, but easy to clean since in is right above the sink( things splatter up when cleaning pots and pans). You could do a faux wood, screen shade, or a woven wood on this window.

At a later date, you could add drapes or window coverings to bring in pattern color, or simply softness. I would follow the suggestions from freedom place 1.

I have a similar problem as you - my living/dining area windows are 260" wide. But mine will be open most of the time, and closed when the sun gets too bright. After a ton of research (look for posts on this forum by me), I have decided that traverse rods are my only option if I dont want support brackets / center supports in between the rod. Even with custom traverse rod, I am having to buy two and take the finials off for them to create a faux center. Hope that helps!

@Melndo The walls are Benjamin Moore Rockport Gray: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/find-your-color/color/HC-105/rockport-gray?color=HC-105 Our window is north facing as well. There is a large Japanese maple near the window so we don't get a ton of light there. I have the floor lamps, two table lamps and a light on the ceiling that isn't in the picture to make sure the room gets enough light. We actually use this room as a music room. There is a piano on the wall that isn't in the picture. Hope this helps! Glad you like it. :)

You have a few options when it comes to your windows and they depend mostly on your budget. So you can have long motorized roller shades that cover all three window with one unit for example. Or you do individual units but manual operation for each window with the top and middle units pretty much fixed with a transparent or light translucent fabric. A photo of the house would help, but my own choice would be for the windows to have the same treatments if they're large and close together...same size, too? We have plantation shutters throughout our house and I do like the continuity from the outside. That being said, I've seen it work nicely with different treatments if they're at least the same color. It's just that your description makes me think the same treatments would be best. Not a pro...just my own preference.

Between your corner window and kitchen window, and the fact that as you say you're dealing with so many windows of different sizes, I'd be tempted to call a professional. Have you looked at Houzz listings for Seattle area pros for this? I looked quickly and here's one with five good reviews,

Someone local would also understand better about maximizing the local light and insulating for the the climate.
