Oh, crossed. Okay, that's quite an interesting layout. Definitely art on that blank wall, and pull the table out a bit further. It looks cramped. Then pay attention to dressing the table itself. That vase is too dark, it's scarceely visible. Try three plants in a row -- same plants, same containers, and perhaps place them on a runner.

I would not add a rug at all after seeing the other pictures and reading the space is 8X10. Your would need a rug that size just so the chairs didn't go over the edge when pulled back and that would like wall to wall carpeting. I would leave the floor bare and add felt pads to the bottom of the chairs to protect the floor (if not already done). I would color in pretty blue curtains and large over sized piece of art on the wall for color and drama. Not sure what your you like in art but these give you an idea of what I am thinking. Great Big Canvas is a great source for oversized art at good prices.

One thing to bear in mind is that the rug in the dining area needs to play nicely with the one in the living room as well as with the dining room chairs. I would choose a rug that fit most of the room, so 8'x10' or 7'x10' just a bit smaller.

The key is to find a place, like esalerugs or ecarpetgallery or a local store etc, that offers free shipping AND free returns, so that you can try the rug in the room to see how it works and be able to return it if it doesn't.

I would find one larger piece of art (I believe that art should be chosen because it's meaningful and not because it color co-ordinates with the room) and use a metal frame in the same finish as the light fixture. I wouldn't rush the art, wait until you find something you like or that's meaningful to you.

I can't quite tell, but do you have two curtain rods rather than one long one? If so, I'd change to one longer rod.

I agree with Rina about putting a light-colored runner or tray on the table to break up the dark expanse.

Love your dining room but the end chairs look a little crowded for people to get into or get around to sit in the back....could you put the table the other way...end chair to the window wall? Your table would probably stick out into the hall a little bit but might not look so crowded...only you can tell.

I would not use a rug under that table because anything that is large enough for the table would appear to encroach into the hall and make the DR look even smaller. And create a trip hazard.

With the low ceiling over your window, I would stick with the sheers or consider Roman shades. It is probably a less is more situation for window coverings.

Something with color and interest for you to go on that wall would be my focus. Look around and see if you have something in another room waiting to fill that spot. If not, take your time to buy something that you like.

I agree with not adding a rug. You usually need something 4 feet wider and 4 feet longer than the table and that would just be too big for the space. I would concentrate, instead, on a larger area rug for the living room. I like rugsusa.com and esalerugs.com for free shipping. Esale rugs also has free returns. As far as windows, I would add inside mount wood woven blinds for privacy and just panels at the far left and right of the windows to add softness. Find a great piece of art as suggested and then add something to the center of the table that pulls from the art. I like a runner on a table as well but I use 36" long runners so they can stay on the table and not get in the way of placemats or place settings. As far as the living room, I would try to center the loveseat in the window and consider adding a slender table to the far right and use a smaller, rectangular coffee table for just the sofa. What size rug is currently in the living room?

I think an 8x10 would be a better size for the living room. Did you want to stay with an oriental with the center medallion?

I would paint that blank wall in the dining area a rich taupe or teal blue. The birches painting with either of the Nourison carpets (Celestial or Karma) would be gorgeous. I agree with turning the table and using plant(s) in cream pottery on a short runner in teal or copper. A heavier window treatment would balance the weight of the table and open space better.

Even with neutral patterned chair, the Kaleen could be pretty, and not too much... your rust art with?
