New foyer ideas

We recently bought this case piece on line and it looked very different when it arrived. I guess reclaimed furniture can vary for one to the next. Its not refundable so now I need to make the best of it.
I’m looking to get rid of the mirror and lamps and need some ideas on the following:
What to hang on the 9‘ foot wall...a different mirror, lots of smaller pics, one or two bigger. Please give examples!
What lights to use. I’m thinking shorter maybe more squattier, one or two?
What to put on the case piece.
Lastly any ideas on how to tone down these color?

Comments (12)Hello fellow Tri-leveler!! Ours opens into the LR, too. You come in the front door and the room flows from your right. We have an oriental runner that flows from the front door to the kitchen doorway straight ahead. There is an antique chest of drawers centered on the lefthand wall that has a lamp and a changing display of decorative stuff. There is another oriental in the LR area with bare hardwood floor between the edge of the runner and the larger area one. There is a comfortable wingback chair anchoring each of the two ends of the rug. The sofa is against the far righthand (house end) wall. The wing chairs face the sofa at an angle. Since the room is not huge, the space in the middle of the room is not "lost" looking and the pattern of the oriental can be seen. Under the large pic window is a low ancient wash bench that can be used as additional seating if needed. There are usually a few plants parked here along w/ current reading materials. On the inside wall across from the pic window is a large secretary that is closed when I am not using it as my desk. There is an old chair parked here that can be angled to either wing chair or turned to the sofa... wherever conversation takes place. The arrangement works as a "foyer" because the runner acts as a "hallway" of sorts leading you to the kitchen or the stairs. The backs of the chairs (at angles) helps guide you along the "hall". The opening between the chairs acts as the enterance to the actual LR. The hardwood floor showing between the runner and the larger area one also helps seperate the two areas. I love the open-ness of this space. One fellow tri neighbor actually built a real wall w/ a cased opening into his LR. I hate it! His foyer is a dark tunnel and feels tight and cramped. He lost all the beautiful light coming in from his pic window. I go home and walk thru my front door and feel so relaxed. Part of the reason our arrangement works is that all the furniture fits the scale of the room. The sofa and chairs are of a smaller rather than a massive scale. There is a mix of open legs (chairs, side table, washbench) and solids (secretary base and skirted sofa). It's not a lot of LITTLE pieces (which can be way too busy), but it's not under or over filled w/ too large of pieces. I believe scale is huge in the overall comfort and function of a room. This can be hard to do in our tighter Tri's and Quad's. I think that screens and sofa backs have their places... but to me they are too massive and dismissive feeling. Too solid. Comments (21)seagrass_gw I hope to be able to fit them in too. It's usually completely empty in the spring and summer, except for rain coats. It's also currently holding the dog's leash. The cord bugs me too. I'm going to create a hook and pull for it, with the pull being stored in one of the closets. But that will be another day. party_music50 There isn't any room for a bench. The hallway is literally only as wide as the front door. I'm planning on putting a runner down and artwork above the doorway to pull your eye up as part of the makeover. You are correct about putting the cabinets where the bench is. That cabinet area space is about 76" long and 26" deep. Comments (19)Think about your budget for this. Large light fixtures can get pretty pricey, painting will need scaffolding and then there’s the paneling. (I personally struggle with replacing ‘perfectly good’ anything so I’m always looking for retrofits that make it work in a new way. Sustainability.) You can ‘panel’ by adding 1/4” thick pre-painted lathe in the configuration you like (squares/rectangles or board and batten), caulking and painting with a semi-gloss to match the rest of your trim. https://www.younghouselove.com/?s=board+and+batten Your light fixture probably (?) has a reasonable size and total wattage and it looks like it could handle the addition of a shade. I would lengthen the chain and drop the fixture in line with the second floor in the space between the upper window and the door. If you want a drum shade, you might check a site like www.fenchel.com and call and see what type of attachment might work for a custom sized shade that could be added over the fixture. They make them self adhesive so you could add any paper or fabric you might like to the exterior. Pebeo Gilding Wax is a great way to add gold highlights to anything. This would be something to do when the scaffolding is up for painting. Once all that’s done, you might find you don’t need a large art piece on the wall. If you do, look at www.art.com or some other reproduction site that will custom size prints or glicees. On the other hand, if you really want a new light fixture, I’ve used www.shadesoflight.com or www.1-800lighting.com or Home Depot or Lowes or even Amazon. Comments (22)I like the current slate floor. It is beautiful and unique. I think the issue (if any) is that from what I can see in the adjacent room - your style is very traditional/transitional - and so the bold, MCM type floor is sort of the unwelcome guest. I don’t know if painting the floor solves that, because you still would have the free-flowing/staggered design/patterning of the slate - plus, you then permanently alter the floor. As another option, you could consider getting a much larger entry rug - that complements the rug in the adjacent area. The entry rug does not have to match that other rug in color, etc.; but should be a similar style - and an entry rug that would just about completely cover the slate floor. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI like the console and if you get the right items placed in that area you may end up not wanting to tone it down. I think if you are ok with an eclectic style that would be the easiest route. You could do lamps that pull out the colors of the console and then a contrasting art piece framed with a burnished metal. Once you have the art piece, which would be the focus aside from your console, picked out you can grab a bud vases, planters, small sculptures, etc and place them.
Your console could lend itself to farmhouse/rustic as well (really depends on your other home decor). Couple examples below.

6 years agoA statement lamp piece not overpowering simple, and large artwork to compliment the piece. I love your piece assuming the rest of your home is farmhouse or a bit rustic. ... Not seeing the rest of your home this is what I came up with first glance. Looks nice with rug in the background. Good luck.....

Top photo for decor items of simplistic yet elegant treasures to display withon your foyer piece. Flea market,antique shops,Houzz, Etsy and consignment stores carry wonderful vintage or new items like sterling mint julep cups, trophys, riding boots and decanters. Old riding hats for display in a large silver trophy. A few ideas to go outside the box and create something special. Have fun with it!!! The second photo I like the horse bronze color as it brings out the colors in your piece, Scale is important as much as the texture and color. What is the furniture measurements. If your ceiling is 9 feet I would try to maximize the height in your decor. Best of luck.
