Can I grow tall annuals to shade baby fruit trees their first year?

I've ordered 3 apples, 2 pears & 2 peaches & we planted 2 pawpaws last fall.

I've been reading that newly-planted fruit trees (especially pawpaws) should be shaded for their first couple of years & one recommendation was to ring them with sunflowers & pole beans. I'm concerned about possible allelopathy from the sunflowers (inhibiting neighboring plants), but like the concept.

I'm considering Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) both because of its size & because of its reported deer-repellent properties (we're new to this yard, so there's a lot I don't know yet, but I saw hoof-prints where my chard & kale got eaten last fall).

Does Sweet Annie sound like a good companion?

Are there other annuals that would be advisable?

Thanks :)!
