My aloe vera plant is a mess. Please help

My dad has an aloe vera plant that he completely stopped taking care of. It wasn't ever kept in the sun and it was never repotted, was kept in a tall & narrow plastic pot. It's growing too tall and it looks as if it's growing a new stem and is toppling over. I'm not sure if or how to save this plant if I can get any advice. I'll try to include photos.

I'm not sure if the stem is too long or if I need to clip some leaves/which ones I should ? In my attempt to transfer the plant to a clay pot, several roots came off so I'm not sure if I should cut the stem and let the roots regrow? Should I cut off the part that's leaning to the side?

I never grew Aloe vera, but have few aloes. Look at this thread: -beheading plants - showing different aloe being beheaded, and I think that same could work for your plant. There are many other/different succulents shown in same thread. I am posting this also to bring your thread up, so someone with A. vera experience may see it and respond.

A few years ago my solitary Aloe vera was in a similar mess - I eventually managed to get it out of its large pot and trimmed it back to one head and a bit of root which I put in a smaller pot. It was very happy and grew like a turnip and has become a mess again. I would give it away if I knew anyone who wanted it.

Yep, Dan you are right. I just flipped the light on out on my balcony and sure enough I saw a HUGE mouse or rat run across it. It ran into my storage unit that is connected to my balcony. I'm too freaked out to open that door and see what kind of damage it's done. Yikes! Not sure how to get rid of it/them but hoping maintenance can! Thanks so much as I was on the lookout for those big wood roaches and even put out boric acid. This would explain why I was still seeing the droppings.

I would take it out of that decorative pot and use a saucer instead. I water my aloe when the soil looks dry. If I were you I'd not water it for at least 2 weeks. It is a succulent, so it will survive. With most of my plants I can tell if they need water by lifting there pots up. If your doesn't have drainage you should repot it.
