Built-ins around flush fireplace
Comments (4)The photo you are showing is not a flush fireplace like you have. The shelving would most likely be 12 inches deep, so would stick out next to your fireplace. Quite honestly, I would not do it,although, I think if you put built ins on both sides, you might be able to make it look decent. My fireplace has a built in on the left and none on the right. To make it look balanced, I have a free standing cabinet on the opposite side, because, it just looks weird to have a built in on one side....See MoreBuilt-ins Around Fireplace?

You may need the wood from the part you cut off the right side to help you pry the left side loose from the walls after it is severed from the mantel over the uprights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48qQ5ToP95M Cut the edges as straight as you can; however, don't sweat the small stuff -- you can smooth the surfaces and round the corners after once the excess mantel has been removed....See MoreProfessional Advice - Built In around fireplace
Comments (5)I'm with your cabinetmaker. Say he builds them at 1" and they sag. Now you're on the internet telling and showing everyone in the world that Jim's Cabinet Shop does crappy work. No one is reading Jim's I-told-him-so rebuttal. Were I Jim, you'd get the 2" or you'd get your deposit back. Your choice, but you ain't gettin' 1" shelves with his name on 'em....See MoreBuilt-ins around fireplace? Yes or no?
Comments (19)I am not a great decorator. However, I am going to put in my 2 cents. I love books and bookshelves. I think a wrap-around bookshelf on the left side that is the same height. Use the same molding as the doorway detail at the top and bottom to make it look intentional and consistent. It would add a lovely warm feeling. Steam radiators are much hotter than hot water radiators. A cover is necessary if you have children. I put a piece of stone on top of my last cover, and the cat claimed the space. To balance the look of all the books, I would put either three small paintings or one long one. Your home is lovely and whatever you decide will look nice....See Moredeegw
