Windows Design Dilemma kids room

My cousin's son is a non-verbal autistic teen who has broken his bedroom window by pounding on it. Rather than installing bars in the room, he would like to replace the window with a stronger glass. I don't know if he can use a shower door grade glass or perhaps polycarbonate or plexi-glass. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Today you can have many different impact windows in the regular hardware stores like home depot and similar for a very affordable price, maybe you can investigate that.

Tempered Laminated Glass would more than likely suffice, Is this a single pane or insulated (double) glazed window? The sash would need to have the existing glass removed and then the new glass installed. A local glass shop would be the best route to start.

@Windows on Washington Ltd I agree that the secondary window is the best solution for sound insulation but I am not really comfortable with it because of the aesthetics issue. Also installing a secondary window requires me to remove my blind and install it again plus as I said my remaining sill width is just 7.5 cms. Is there no way I can get good sound insulation by replacing windows? P.S.: I don't want to completely 'soundproof' my room, just reduce the sound to such a level that it stops being a distraction/nuisance. When I open my window, the sound level is around 70 db. After closing the current window, it comes down to around 60 db. I would like to reduce it to at least 45 db. (all these measurements are taken by the android app 'sound meter') @oberon476: I would also love to have your suggestion on this..

mammapinky Yes, they are. I did that on purpose. I wanted a different illusion than just the mirrors hanging, if that makes sense. I want the mirrors and curtains anchoring the bed, like a headboard. Thank you! To everyone mentioning the mirror height, don't tell my husband! (lol) He absolutely hates hanging curtains, shelves, mirrors and paintings. haha I'll have to wait to the weekend or a day we both have the time and we shall raise them. I'll have to ease him into it. ;) Should they go the same height as the curtains? Can we see the whole space ? IMO shutters block light and view I think it is nice for a child to be able to see the trees I would do a roman shde in a fun fabric and honestly it does not even need to function since you have a blind.As for the seat you do realize that that window glass should be safety glass . I mention it becuase my cousin put his head right through a window above a window seat and needed many stiches.

Maybe some kind of frosted privacy film is an option. It could probably just go 3/4 of the way up the window so the top could still be clear while still providing privacy for anyone in the room of normal height. Window film alone won’t be enough to block street lights that may be distracting for anyone trying to sleep. What about some kind of room darkening opaque drapes that block glare, provide privacy, but still let you see out through them enough to be able to determine if the window is open or closed?

Tempered would definitely work here and will hold up better than laminate. The issue will be that the tempered glass is extremely hard. Its the same reason that we don't put tempered in car windshields vs. laminated. Every collision would result in a skull fracture if it were tempered.

If you do use laminated, make sure they laminate the interior glass so that if he breaks the glass, it stays together and he doesn't have the chance to cut himself on large and injurious pieces of glass.

If you used poly-carbonate, that would probably be the "safest", but you require a bit of adaptation to make it work with the existing window.

How old are the current windows? Many can be re-glazed and outfitted with different glass with the right professional or you can call the original manufacturer and ask for a new glass/sash with the specified glass (laminated or tempered).

I just read an article about hammerglass I think that is like the polycarbonate one mentioned and probably the best idea.

https://www.hammerglass.com/ is indeed a polycarbonate material and will be fantastic for fracture toughness. https://www.hammerglass.com/property/windows-doors/ Withstood 72 axe strokes! Obviously getting the correct product and mounting it securely will be key. Make sure that whatever you choose has a warranty against yellowing - untreated or uncoated polycarbonate yellows badly in the sun. The polycarbonate preferably will have UV inhibitors directly in the material. Second best would be an anti-UV coating.
