A few years ago, I did some research and found the height is best 16-19 inches, depending on taste. Ours is 17 high x 14 deep x 34 wide, and it is comforable and practical. The total shower is 34 x 72. If the shower were 5-8 inches shorter, it would still be OK. A smaller shower (58x28 has a corner bench that is 18 inches high. Also OK, but I pefer the 17 inch heght. You need to be explicit with contractor as to exact "finished" height you want.

The glass door in question is for our condo. At home we have a glass shower door that is 34" X 72" on a 6" threshold. The combined height of 78" is more than adequate. Our shower is at the end of our tub. Glass between tub and shower is also 78" above shower floor. This is looking less like 'science' and more like 'whatever suits you'. I don't want the new door to look 'skinny-minny' and I don't want to over spend for it. (Bids on the 76" glass are $1700 - $1900, installed.) So...again... 1. Do glass doors come in 72" heights? 2. Are they less expensive than 76" tall doors? 3. Is there any functional problem with a door 78" high? (Is there a 'steam' issue -- standard opening between top of door and shower ceiling?)

Not to be silly or cynical, what are the two people trying to do? If you want two shower positions, each will need the better part of 3' x 4' to be able to shower, wash, etc, without impeding the other. The ideal layout for that is either an double open ended hall style shower or a middle entry with two ends with shower positions. Now, do we also need seats or benches, because thats even more room. If you want a single shower position that two people can use together, 3' x 3' is an absolute minimum for people soaping each other up, and there is very little extra space. In reality, a 4' x 5' would be reasonably functional, however, there would still almost always be one party outside the water flow. A single rainfall head, with additional wands or heads, might work in a smaller shower, but otherwise at least two distinct positions seem called for. With dual rainfalls and wands, a 7+' long shower, 3'+ wide, with a single entry in the middle might function, but a longer one would be better.

Thanks--we are planning a tiled shower floor, but dimensions are similar to what they would be for a shower pan. (I am curious to know why you prefer shower pans, too--we could also do that but thought the tile would be better to use aesthetically.) There will be a recessed medicine cabinet over the sink, and I am toying with a recessed tall cabinet between the studs on one wall too. Won't be deep, but we are not looking to store too much here--the house's primary bathroom is a short walk away and has good storage. If we do the longer shower, we will use a wall-mount toilet (only way to make the width work). With the square shower, we have room for a standard toilet. (The tradeoff for that design is that we lose an adjacent office area--although it will be tiny even with the narrower shower, and may not be worth trying to save. We plan to tape it out later this month before making the final decision.)
