Terminology help!?

Looking for alternative to base cabinets (mainly for added counter top space). I came across this open shelving look but have no idea what to call it or if its something common to build or purchase.

Help?

Sophie will know. Sorry I dont. Question is, do you want it to look exactly like that? IKEA has pieces that will work for you, including the work bench below, but then so do Home Depot and the like.

your goal is added counters....you can order base cab drawers at increased depth...or regular depth base cabs can be installed a few inches out from walls...the extra 3-4 in depth increase makes a nice difference for many people and still the standard 12 in depth wall cabs are easy to maneuver. If you want to, wall cabs can be ordered at 15 in depth to correspond to the tweak at the base cab area. the open slat format in the pic is just okay if you ask me.....invest in stacks of drawers-a timeless choice.

The first thing I would ask him is what you asked us -- what is included with that hood liner? A hood liner, at a minimum, is an assembly of sheet metal performing the function of the inside part of a hood. It might also include a blower or fan. It could also include lights. Usually it would not include the ducting or roof cap. A hood is a liner and an exterior usually selected to be visually acceptable. In some cases, particularly commercial hoods, the liner is also its own exterior. Higher-end residential hoods may have different sheet metal inside than outside. A blower is a fairly general term for an air moving component, but is often restricted to squirrel cage devices and centrifugal devices. Typically these direct the air flow to bend 90 degrees. Fans are nominally axial devices where the airflow is directed along the same path. But I wouldn't try to be too strict about these distinctions. Hoods and liners without blowers will need a blower somewhere, either in-line in the ducting or on the roof or side of the house, depending on where the ducting exits. Controls for the blower motor will need to be mounted somewhere; a means may be included with the liner or hood. Best to go look at hoods and liners in stores, review on-line stores that sell them, and visit hood manufacturer web sites, of which there are many. kas

If you remove the curb (ledge) then you're creating a "wet room"... that is water can/will flow out onto the actual bathroom floor. That's cool, and great for older people with mobility issues who need to roll into a shower, and its also very European... but the WHOLE bathroom needs to be designed for that, with proper waterproofing to the entire floor and stuff like that. Without seeing your space I would guess you're better off keeping your curb. WE've just been through this design process and researching the glass. It sounds like you'll want a fixed panel (which can be attached to the wall/curb with either clips or U-channel) and a door that's hinged on its adjacent wall. If you google "frameless shower" and look at "images" you will get lots of ideas. If you want the door to actually hinge on the other perpendicular glass panel, you will need a metal support arm over the top of it, which is a different look, IMHO.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet, is that the phrase "recirculating kit" could refer to a couple of different things. Some range hoods can be ducted outside or set up as recirculating "out of the box". If you want to duct it outside, you only need to buy the actual duct (from Home Depot > Ventilation aisle). If you want it recirculating, you have to buy the appropriate charcoal filters ("carbon filters" - from the hood manufacturer). These hoods will typically have a series of slots or holes at the top of the chimney, so in a recirculating installation, the air can come back out into the room. Here's an example: In addition to the slots on top, there's also a provision to mount the charcoal filters somewhere on the bottom of the hood. In the case of a hood like this, the "recirculating kit" is only the charcoal filters, typically in the $ 20-70 range. ----- However, some hoods do NOT have a provision to be recirculating, unless you buy a special piece that will let the air come out (the slotted piece above the hood in this picture): ...and THEN you can buy the charcoal filters. So in the case of the Viking "recirculation kit" above, there's a $ 390 upcharge to make the hood -capable- of recirculation, and -then- it's $ 79 for the filter. So, be sure to find out what the phrases "recirculating kit" or "capable of recirculation" or "ducted/ductless option" refer to - different manufacturers will have different interpretations.

THANK you so much for responding. I guess you can see why I'm confused by his question. So you're saying that when he asks which regulating body, he means "who is reviewing and certifying the soil?" I'm sorry if its a dumb question. I have little to no knowledge or experience with gardening or soil. I'm worried that if they find out I'm not experienced, they might take advantage of me and charge me triple the amount. The company I'm looking to order from advertises that all of their soil is certified organic. So I'm really confused as to why he is asking me who will be reviewing the soil I purchase from him. Essentially I'm looking to order their soil, ship it across the country, and add my own recipe of organic ingredients to create customized soils for different gardening needs. But I dont want any chemicals added. I want 100% organic. So I figured if I am using their soil, it's already certified organic and I won't need to have it reviewed and tested. What are your thoughts? Again I can't thank you enough for responding to my question so quickly. I apologize if I'm not using this site correctly or if I'm asking too much. It’s just slatted ventilated shelving built to take a counter . You could fake it with some of the slatted Cedar garment shelving from a closet organizing system. It will not be cheaper than cabinets. It will be more expensive.

That’s how cabinets are done in tropical countries. It’s easier to get at the bugs and iguanas that wander in. And the metal, concrete, or tropical hardwoods are insect resistant. Everyone is used to washing everything they use before they use it. Because it’s going to get dusty and dirty without doors.

Ha - told ya. My routine response has become “Sophie will know.” How wedded are you to the idea of integration? The IKEA piece is stainless with a bamboo top, it’s 42” wide, and it costs $400. If all you’re after is benchtop, you could do what the pros do and buy a stainless work table like the one below, 60” long. It is much less expensive, but stainless is such a great surface. It would add a certain industrial feel though...

I'm not suggesting you use/hack this but it does also remind me of Ikea's Molger bench/table. If you google it, there are some posts on folks who've used it in different ways. I actually have one. This is from an Apartment Therapy article about the Molger.
