The Kitchen Table

Great Movie!

DH and I saw The Darkest Hour yesterday. What a great movie. Gary Olden as Winston Churchill was very good, and his makeup to fatten him up was very well done. I enjoyed all the history lessons involved in the setting of May, 1940, England as France, Belgium, and Poland were falling to Hitler. It really brought home the distinct possibility of Hitler winning WWII.

My movie group went last Friday. Unfortunately I didn't join them. As much as I wanted to see it, I didn't want to be in crowds because my resistance is low right now. I was glad I didn't go because they said the theater was crowded. Guess I'll just wait to see it on Amazon when it comes. This Friday we're going to see The Greatest Showman. It didn't get wonderful reviews, but friends that have seen it said it was wonderful!.

I saw Gary Oldham on a talk show the other day promoting the movie. He looks like an Oscar candidate for sure. May need to go see that one. I always enjoyed going to the Churchill War Rooms in London when I traveled there a lot, especially when they added the Churchill museum to it with a lot of his memorabilia.

We saw this this afternoon. WOW What a thriller!!! I have to say, I was about ready to walk out in the very beginning...didn't like that. It is a pretty gruesome movie, but you are on the edge of your seats the whole time...to the VERY end!!!

All mentioned already but here's mine: Julie and Julia - the Julia bits not the Julie bits - when Julia first arrives in France and is served Trout a la Meuniere and has an epiphany - starting her life-long love affair with French food and cooking. Eat, Drink, Man, Woman Tampopo Chocolat - "It's not my favorite." "It's not my favorite." "It's not my favorite." Finally - "THIS is my favorite." The top two without a doubt for me: Big Night - I can't tell you how much I love Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub. Love, love, love them both. And number one ---- Babette's Feast - a movie that explains without words how food and sensuality are intertwined and the marriage between them is a human necessity. How Babette brought joy to the utterly sense-starved, ascetic townsfolk and their bitter, frigid and abstinent lives, lifting them at least for one evening to a truer meaning of life than they had ever let themselves experience. That Babette gave up everything to "feed" them in this manner, to share her gifts, to thank them, to deliver a dream... still an astonishing film.

I really liked this movie too, especially the first part where he was lost. It was a bit intense and scary too, considering the situation he was in. The second part of the movie I didn't enjoy as much, thought it dragged a bit and it seemed that the resolution took a while to happen. An amazing story, though!

I'm weary of Churchill. We've had quite a long spate of WWI and WWII novels and dramas. Time to get back to Bonaparte? Henry VIII?

Did you know that Churchill never wore anything but pink silk underwear? hee-hee

SheliaJoyce - Thanks for the review, I am wary about movies until I read a trusted persons review,

Chisue! My DH really wants to see this movie, Now it'll be hard to watch it without visualizing pink underwear.

I only know about the underwear because I've read the diary of a (very distant) relation who was a contemporary of Churchill's, and who found him an opportunist.

Then again, this man -- engine behind the success of "News of the World" -- was raised as 'the poor relative' -- quite the opposite of Churchill's status by birth. He was incredibly 'tight', even for a Scot. He slept in a cold bedroom in a narrow iron bed above the London mansion he built to entertain business associates.

Saw the movie today. Very powerful. I was exhausted when it was over. So glad I got to see it.
