Some of them, yes, especially if the rug is the oval shape and you can see where the material stops in the middle. But! Look at Dash and Albert area rugs. Fantastic choice. This rug won’t show well, you have to see it in person, but it is a braided jute and comes in 5 beautiful neutral colors.

This rug is actually a soft gray green…I can’t say enough good things.

For an older home, I like the stripes, as well.

If you're in a historic home, braided rugs may look very well. They are soft and cushiony and I think they are a great choice for a kids bedroom. Depending on their age (the kids, that is), an inexpensive braided rug is a great choice. Spilled gatorade in pink lasts forever.

Authentic braided rugs are actually made from (usually) three strips of wool, that are sewn together across the short edge. The long pieces are then literally braided, with a tool/contraption on each of the three strands that holds the wool in a tube shape. As the strips come to an end, new strips are sewn to the short ends-- this made good use of scrap wool as well as allowed for color changes.

If you ever find a vintage/genuine braided rug, you will love it :)

Thought you might find it interesting to know how braided rugs were made (if you didn't already). My mother used to braid rugs and I got to "help."

I have a colonial home in a cottage / colonial style and have braided rugs in a couple of rooms - including my stair treads:)

I wish I had one in my living room but the really nice ones are expensive and I need a big one - and I have puppies.

jhmarie - are those stair rugs attached? I've never seen that before - first thing I thought of was slipping and falling on my butt!! :-)

Yes they are attached by stair tread tape. They have been there for about 2 1/2 years. Only the bottom on has moved a bit, but it is not loose. The treads are by Colonial Mills (Wayfair) and I used their recommended carpet tape found on Amazon. I pulled up part of the bottom one recently to see if the tape had hurt the finish - but the finish looks great.

There are plenty of rugs out there that look like updated woven rag rugs. Allows you to complement the historic home, but update the appearance.
